Everything is dualstack. Disabling IPv6, stops the problem. The traffic is routed via 2 firewalls OpenBSD 6.6) and a VPN. I attach 2 textfiles (tcpdump) with an extracted flow: gw1, the OpenBSD side db3: the FreeBSD side I also include an example, where the problem does not happen: db3,ok.txt Which details needs to be collected to insulate the problem? reopen this issue? used components to reproduce it; - physical hardware (https://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/povw/poweredge-r440); - intel i350 gigabit network card [igb] (class=3D0x020000 rev=3D0x01 as root, of course); - perform an `ifconfig` to get actual status/options of all igb interfaces; - plug a cable to the igb interface of your choice (the other end must be connected to a switch or anything that can trigger layer1 activity); - perform an `ifconfig` to get actual status/options of all igb interfaces; - unplug the cable; - perform an `ifconfig` to get actual status/options of all igb interfaces. NOTE: after performing an `ifconfig igb0 up` and testing it all again, the feedback to its physical status are all fine. * igb0 is the only one showing 'WOL_MAGIC' but that's maybe some setting fr= om the BIOS I should check in a few. =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D igb0: flags=3D8802 metric 0 mtu 1500 options=3D4e527bb ether b4:96:91:62:ef:92 media: Ethernet autoselect status: no carrier nd6 options=3D29 igb1: flags=3D8802 metric 0 mtu 1500 options=3D4e507bb ether b4:96:91:62:ef:93 media: Ethernet autoselect status: no carrier nd6 options=3D29 =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D MORE ABOUT IT: the odd situation is that we can see "status:" on all intel interfaces even before performing the very first `ifconfig igb0 up` --- for= the onboard broadcom interfaces, there's no such a thing (all broadcom stay DOWN and display no "status:" line before performing `ifconfig bge0 up`) =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D bge0: flags=3D8802 metric 0 mtu 1500 options=3Dc019b ether 4c:d9:8f:8f:11:9a media: Ethernet autoselect nd6 options=3D29 bge1: flags=3D8802 metric 0 mtu 1500 options=3Dc019b ether 4c:d9:8f:8f:11:9b media: Ethernet autoselect nd6 options=3D29 =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-net@freebsd.org Wed Dec 11 13:47:50 2019 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-net@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 44EF61D6FD3 for ; Wed, 11 Dec 2019 13:47:50 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (mailman.nyi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::50:13]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 47XytG1CF8z471k for ; Wed, 11 Dec 2019 13:47:50 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) id 2566F1D6FD2; Wed, 11 Dec 2019 13:47:50 +0000 (UTC) Delivered-To: net@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 252A31D6FD1 for ; Wed, 11 Dec 2019 13:47:50 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:3]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org", Issuer "Let's Encrypt Authority X3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 47XytG0DXSz471h for ; Wed, 11 Dec 2019 13:47:50 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::50:1d]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 01E50C210 for ; Wed, 11 Dec 2019 13:47:50 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.5]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id xBBDln8f021348 for ; Wed, 11 Dec 2019 13:47:49 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: (from www@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id xBBDlnwS021345 for net@FreeBSD.org; Wed, 11 Dec 2019 13:47:49 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: www set sender to bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: net@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 236724] igb(4): Interfaces fail to switch active to inactive state Date: Wed, 11 Dec 2019 13:47:49 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: CC X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: 12.0-RELEASE X-Bugzilla-Keywords: IntelNetworking, regression X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Some People X-Bugzilla-Who: egypcio@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: Closed X-Bugzilla-Resolution: FIXED X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: marius@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: mfc-stable12+ X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-net@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.29 Precedence: list List-Id: Networking and TCP/IP with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 11 Dec 2019 13:47:50 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D236724 --- Comment #21 from Vin=C3=ADcius Zavam --- btw, I also tested stable/12 and releng/12.1 live images! I have a trouble with simultaneity of switching between carp interfaces. FreeBSD 12.0 My config for host A: ifconfig_vlan2_alias0="inet vhid 1 advskew 100 pass password alias 192.168.2.10/32" ifconfig_vlan3_alias0="inet vhid 2 advskew 100 pass password alias 192.168.3.10/32" ifconfig_vlan4_alias0="inet vhid 3 advskew 100 pass password alias 192.168.4.10/32" ifconfig_vlan5_alias0="inet vhid 4 advskew 100 pass password alias 192.168.5.10/32" ifconfig_vlan6_alias0="inet vhid 5 advskew 100 pass password alias 192.168.6.10/32" ifconfig_vlan7_alias0="inet vhid 6 advskew 100 pass password alias 192.168.7.10/24" ifconfig_vlan8_alias0="inet vhid 7 advskew 100 pass password alias 192.168.8.10/30" ifconfig_vlan9_alias0="inet vhid 8 advskew 100 pass password alias 192.168.9.10/30" For host B the same, but advskew = 1. Hosts are routers and work correctly, when all carp interface have master status at the same host. But if I try to get this state only by carp tools, this work good, when one of my hosts have net.inet.carp.demotion = 0 But this not always like this. For example, after turning on host A have demotion = 1920 and host B = 1440. And in this situation I usually have something like this: # ifconfig | grep carp carp: MASTER vhid 1 advbase 1 advskew 100 carp: BACKUP vhid 2 advbase 1 advskew 100 carp: BACKUP vhid 3 advbase 1 advskew 100 carp: BACKUP vhid 4 advbase 1 advskew 100 carp: BACKUP vhid 5 advbase 1 advskew 100 carp: BACKUP vhid 6 advbase 1 advskew 100 carp: BACKUP vhid 7 advbase 1 advskew 100 carp: BACKUP vhid 8 advbase 1 advskew 100 I tried to set vhid = 1 for all carp interfaces, but with the same result. Of cource, net.inet.carp.preempt = 1 for both hosts. Started from FreeBSD 10, I used script to set the carp value based on the value of one of the interfaces, but not sure, that it is right decision. May be someone can suggest me what's wrong? I was able to overcome the watchdog timeouts, and related problems by bumping up the values of both kern.ipc.nmbjumbop and kern.ipc.nmbclusters In doing so I have had no issues at all for more than 2 weeks. IMHO the default values for these items are too small. They should either have a larger default, or become dynamic. Allowing them to self-adjust according to the hardware involved. But still have wtchdog timeouts. After some Googling I found duscussion about issues with jumbo buffers. After cheking = this idea I found confirmation - after some time (depending on traffic rate/amou= nt) memory became fragmented and requests to 9k buffers fails. Now I use 1.95 driver from vendor but with very-very dirty hack. I've repla= ced Jumbo_Frame_9k with value 3072. So now re driver use only 4k buffers. I observe the post-translation (4-to-6) packets via ipfwlog0, but a simple ipfw counter rule ipfw matches nothing. My attempt to develop a minimum reproducible example failed in the sense that I did not reproduce the problem. Of course, this implies that one of the many differences between the simplified test (EC2 instance, two jails) and the problem rig (physical server, lagg, vlans, other things going on) is the cause. What I am hoping this list can help me with is being smart about what I try next. Otherwise, I would probably just try to brute force a solution by thinking of ways to permute the config that would rule each possible difference in or out. So far my main troubleshooting tools have been ipfw for its rule counters and nat64lsn stats output, netstat to look at fibs, and tcpdump pointed at real and diagnostic interfaces. What debugging tools and techniques should I employ to do better than brute force? If it would help, I would gladly share the working, EC2/jail demo configs on the list. Sharing the non-working configs I would prefer to do privately or not at all. This is on 12.1-RELEASE. Thank you, --=20 John W. Hi Chris, Thank you for the suggestion. I think I need a little help understanding how I would put it into practice though. The nat64lsn module is part of the ipfw firewall, and pf in FreeBSD hasn't yet picked up a NAT64 capability, so I cannot abandon ipfw in this case. Is the idea to run ipfw and pf at the same time? --=20 John W. It is disabled. However, I don't believe it applies to the nat64lsn module. The IPv6/IPv4 NETWORK ADDRESS AND PROTOCOL TRANSLATION section, Stateful translation subsection says: > After translation NAT64 translator by default sends packets through > corresponding netisr queue. I find no mention of an interaction between nat64lsn and one_pass. Furthermore, the outbound path (6-to-4) is working, and aliased packets are successfully matching ipfw rules. This is what the rule counters look like in the working case after sending a single ping6 from the v6 jail to the v4 jail via the host that performs NAT64: root@freebsd:~ # ipfw show 00100 2 72 setfib 1 ip4 from 198.51.100.4/30 to any 00200 2 72 allow ip4 from 198.51.100.4/30 to any 00300 2 112 setfib 1 ip6 from 2001:db8:64:64::/96 to 2001:db8::/64,2001:db8:1000::/64 00400 2 112 allow ip6 from 2001:db8:64:64::/96 to 2001:db8::/64,2001:db8:1000::/64 00500 1 56 nat64lsn magic ip6 from 2001:db8::/64,2001:db8:1000::/64 to 2001:db8:64:64::/96 // Alias 6-to-4 00600 1 36 nat64lsn magic ip4 from any to 198.51.100.4/30 // De-alias 4-to-6 00700 71 7780 allow ip from any to any 65535 26 2752 deny ip from any to any root@freebsd:~ # ipfw nat64lsn magic show nat64lsn magic prefix4 198.51.100.4/30 prefix6 2001:db8:64:64::/96 log The equivalent counters in the non-working case would be 0 for rules 300 and 400, but 100 and 200 would be non-zero. --=20 John W.
