The only thing you can do as a user is to pkg lock the DRM packages. It's a really annoying situation that the ports tree doesn't support properly. I have been using Blender since 2000. The new Blender 2.80 however not only added some new buttons to the UI but completely removed the Blender Game Engine that I was using for simulations and visualizations !!! Is it possible to have Blender 2.79 as the last one with BGE next to Blender 2.80 port on FreeBSD? For instance blender2.79 binary would be the legacy one, while blender would be the current binary..? A known issue: https://github.com/FreeBSDDesktop/kms-drm/issues/183 It must be built from its port instead: $ make -C /usr/ports/graphics/drm-kmod install Binary packages may be used otherwise. That will remove the drm-kmod from pkg (which is for 12.0 kernel) and build the module for your 12.1 installation's kernel. I also tried to "kldload drm.ko" - still no luck! BTW, if I go back to 12.0 RELEASE, would that solve the problem? Ultimately, I need to rebuild with latest sources anyways to experiment something w/ TCP stack, so hopefully going back to 12.0 should fix - thoughts, please? Any other ideas? Thanks a lot! Did you also install the X driver for your graphics card? If you have a Thinkpad, I guess it contains Intel graphics. What does /var/log/Xorg.0.log say about that? > BTW, if I go back to 12.0 RELEASE, would that solve the problem? It would at least solve the ABI incompatibility problem. Currently I have a system running v12.0-p7 with the following configuration: In /boot/loader.conf: i915kms_load="YES" I have installed the xf86-video-intel package for X, and X starts without any configuration file. I also don't have anything DRM-related in any of the system configuration files. But X works as expected. > Ultimately, I need to rebuild with latest sources anyways to experiment > something w/ TCP stack, > so hopefully going back to 12.0 should fix - thoughts, please? If you get the latest OS sources and obtain a current ports tree, things should be in sync again. But don't use pkg to update your system in such a case without carefully locking the DRM kernel module port as mentioned before. > Any other ideas? Thanks a lot! Try: $ pkg info | grep kmod And remove anything drm-related.  Then reboot. Now $ make -C /usr/ports/graphics/drm-kmod install should do the right thing for you, FORCE_PKG_REGISTER should NOT be necessary. Then as others have pointed out, a userspace part is also needed: $ pkg ins xf86-video-intel Going back to 12.0 will only cause even more things to change once you switch to 12-STABLE if that is your intention. I wonder if 12.1 didn't inherit our setup. In the exit message after you install drm-kmod it should tell you what to put in /etc/rc.conf and give three choices depending on your processor. For an Intel machine the correct entry (at least for the 13.0 folks) is: *kld_list="i915kms"* No path necessary. Give it a try. Yes it can be done, I try and keep several older versions running on my machine at the same time. But as it also means keeping multiple versions of openimageio and openshandinglanguage I am reluctant to add them as official ports. While I haven't updated it in a while, I have a github repo of my unofficial ports. https://github.com/sambler/sambler-redports I just updated graphics/blender279 and graphics/openimageio18 - if you copy those two folders to your ports tree you should be able to build and install blender279. Start it from the terminal as blender-279 and there is also a desktop file that adds it to desktop app menus. There is no OSL support, due to a conflict between oiio versions. -- FreeBSD - the place to B...Software Developing Shane Ambler From owner-freebsd-pkg@freebsd.org Thu Nov 28 07:30:32 2019 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-pkg@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B0A751C7CD1 for ; Thu, 28 Nov 2019 07:30:32 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from 4250.10.freebsd-pkg=freebsd.org@email-od.com) Received: from s1-b0c6.socketlabs.email-od.com (s1-b0c6.socketlabs.email-od.com [142.0.176.198]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 47Nq6w3b2Qz4CF5 for ; Thu, 28 Nov 2019 07:30:32 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from 4250.10.freebsd-pkg=freebsd.org@email-od.com) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; d=email-od.com;i=@email-od.com;s=dkim; c=relaxed/relaxed; q=dns/txt; t=1574926233; x=1577518233; h=content-transfer-encoding:content-type:mime-version:references:in-reply-to:message-id:subject:cc:to:from:date:x-thread-info; bh=+WfMQOBHjB/XeAOS9MPcHZmxVRNDI92lwdebqV9ajCo=; b=LVUJN0XW5y0vNnwHhq6OrXChEu6/qFhBISIkxqx/WS//7252CNEUKhNSx8zascWRY1psxV7+VMi9a1tj2H0fiNnZG6zUNcEe/JzFLU1yqKYTzh27v8itt0VtfeUYP0NcJ1Jul2eRkIr6BgV9nQf3XUF1Cg6a65zxMDfY+/prnd4= X-Thread-Info: NDI1MC4xMi4xYzkwMDAwMDFhNTg0OTEuZnJlZWJzZC1wa2c9ZnJlZWJzZC5vcmc= Received: from r2.sg.in.socketlabs.com (r2.sg.in.socketlabs.com [142.0.179.12]) by mxsg2.email-od.com with ESMTP(version=Tls12 cipher=Aes256 bits=256); Thu, 28 Nov 2019 02:30:26 -0500 Received: from smtp.lan.sohara.org (EMTPY [185.202.17.215]) by r2.sg.in.socketlabs.com with ESMTP(version=Tls12 cipher=Aes256 bits=256); Thu, 28 Nov 2019 02:30:24 -0500 Received: from [192.168.63.1] (helo=steve.lan.sohara.org) by smtp.lan.sohara.org with smtp (Exim 4.92.3 (FreeBSD)) (envelope-from ) id 1iaEFr-000CUh-3A; Thu, 28 Nov 2019 07:30:23 +0000 Date: Thu, 28 Nov 2019 07:30:22 +0000 From: Steve O'Hara-Smith To: vm finance Cc: Theron , freebsd-questions@freebsd.org, freebsd-pkg@freebsd.org Subject: Re: FreeBSD-12.1 on laptop Message-Id: <20191128073022.dc5ad3caa038db91ae3a1a41@sohara.org> In-Reply-To: References: <18414268-96b1-6112-2c91-345aea9e7f24@gmail.com> X-Mailer: Sylpheed 3.7.0 (GTK+ 2.24.32; amd64-portbld-freebsd12.0) X-Clacks-Overhead: "GNU Terry Pratchett" Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Rspamd-Queue-Id: 47Nq6w3b2Qz4CF5 X-Spamd-Bar: / Authentication-Results: mx1.freebsd.org; dkim=pass header.d=email-od.com header.s=dkim header.b=LVUJN0XW; dmarc=none; spf=pass (mx1.freebsd.org: domain of 4250.10.freebsd-pkg=freebsd.org@email-od.com designates 142.0.176.198 as permitted sender) smtp.mailfrom=4250.10.freebsd-pkg=freebsd.org@email-od.com X-Spamd-Result: default: False [-0.25 / 15.00]; TO_DN_SOME(0.00)[]; R_SPF_ALLOW(-0.20)[+ip4:142.0.176.0/20:c]; MV_CASE(0.50)[]; RCVD_COUNT_THREE(0.00)[4]; DKIM_TRACE(0.00)[email-od.com:+]; FORGED_SENDER(0.00)[steve@sohara.org,4250.10.freebsd-pkg=freebsd.org@email-od.com]; FREEMAIL_TO(0.00)[gmail.com]; MIME_TRACE(0.00)[0:+]; RCVD_TLS_LAST(0.00)[]; ASN(0.00)[asn:7381, ipnet:142.0.176.0/22, country:US]; FROM_NEQ_ENVFROM(0.00)[steve@sohara.org,4250.10.freebsd-pkg=freebsd.org@email-od.com]; MID_RHS_MATCH_FROM(0.00)[]; ARC_NA(0.00)[]; NEURAL_HAM_MEDIUM(-0.96)[-0.960,0]; R_DKIM_ALLOW(-0.20)[email-od.com:s=dkim]; FROM_HAS_DN(0.00)[]; RCPT_COUNT_THREE(0.00)[4]; NEURAL_HAM_LONG(-0.95)[-0.951,0]; TAGGED_RCPT(0.00)[]; MIME_GOOD(-0.10)[text/plain]; DMARC_NA(0.00)[sohara.org]; FORGED_SENDER_VERP_SRS(0.00)[]; TO_MATCH_ENVRCPT_SOME(0.00)[]; RCVD_IN_DNSWL_NONE(0.00)[198.176.0.142.list.dnswl.org : 127.0.15.0]; ENVFROM_VERP(0.00)[]; IP_SCORE(0.17)[ip: (-0.39), ipnet: 142.0.176.0/22(0.73), asn: 7381(0.54), country: US(-0.05)]; FREEMAIL_CC(0.00)[gmail.com]; SUSPICIOUS_RECIPS(1.50)[] X-BeenThere: freebsd-pkg@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.29 Precedence: list List-Id: Binary package management and package tools discussion List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 28 Nov 2019 07:30:32 -0000 On Wed, 27 Nov 2019 19:50:59 +0530 vm finance wrote: > Hi Theron, > > I tried to do: > pkg install drm-kmod Uninstall the package, build the port and install it and then pkg lock the resulting package. Blender 2.79 is exactly what I urgently need right now! Will try and report back :-) I have ongoing project based on BlenderGameEngine controlled by external electronics over Python. UX folks decided simply to completely remove BlenderGameEngine with no working alternative of any sort, not even plugin :-( I just remember quite the same siuation around 2008 when some UX smart ass removed menu from toolbar in GIMP saying "no other application works this way" and "according to microsoft progress is about enforcing changes" :-( How people can just destroy something that was working here for over 25 years and stay okay with that?! What kind of ignorant one has to be to work this way?? I saw Godot and Ogre3D ports (how cool they are here already), and Armory Engine, looks nice, also wide multiplatform porting possibilities, but that implies unwanted complication and project in progress reorganization at its core :-( Blender would be only 3D modelling tool and the rest happens somewhere else. BGE allowed to have absolutely everything in one place + standalone binary generation. And none of them allows Python control. Everything would have to be rewritten from scratch. Blender 2.80+ ViewPort does not allow real-time simulations..? Blender now became just fancy 3D modelling and animation tool.. while its core assumption since 1994 was quick VR prototyping. I am also working on UPBGE port that is Blender 2.80 fork with BGE included. Maybe it will be some sort remedy until they re-invent the BGE again in the upstream. Anyway 2.79 is still highly demanded because it is the last official with BGE onboard. I would kindly ask to put that into port tree :-) In the best situation Blender could be a standalone bundle located in /usr/local/{share/}blender/ so we have different versions next to each other with nonimpact on sysyem configuration..? :-) Thank you :-) Tomek -- CeDeROM, SQ7MHZ, http://www.tomek.cedro.info From owner-freebsd-pkg@freebsd.org Thu Nov 28 15:40:02 2019 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-pkg@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AECEA1AD69E for ; Thu, 28 Nov 2019 15:40:02 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from tomek@cedro.info) Received: from mail-oi1-x235.google.com (mail-oi1-x235.google.com [IPv6:2607:f8b0:4864:20::235]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_128_GCM_SHA256 (128/128 bits) server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-signature RSA-PSS (2048 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "smtp.gmail.com", Issuer "GTS CA 1O1" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 47P1zj57shz3DQJ for ; Thu, 28 Nov 2019 15:40:01 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from tomek@cedro.info) Received: by mail-oi1-x235.google.com with SMTP id e9so23643767oif.8 for ; Thu, 28 Nov 2019 07:40:01 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=cedro.info; s=google; h=mime-version:references:in-reply-to:from:date:message-id:subject:to :cc; bh=T5oB2NjoSFuJhQGoBiKdkhQzjPQ3pim8KR0M5hkBElM=; b=J+2uQowPXV17+iJXzO7qAqffMKAZ4OH4PrADY8S2o39I1yebudfIWbHFk9hZuPxpPn yBL/qS8jtYh2SwU0E5M9PoXo7/7wMKLPV8JgDNJ+vLRE/75DM58NKuaNyR8Rwu1vU+Ka bYfASX3H/mC3HV4Ss80ZpuA0i55EI/5ZHHVdZqxL1za60hpvZWNFXkrSuhAIQQ8njtZc 07BsFEgiElsbqic5w7DyQ0U908YvTlnq13S7erZgYI/nI9CVRk+bEtliU8GS87LFskHU laBCbZQqzCCxBiWAr2Oa9ZgC7HIfaj8ucEU0Y3vTx4GMQpiml79jrnXzMYUj3bFr2YMp DrvA== X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=1e100.net; s=20161025; h=x-gm-message-state:mime-version:references:in-reply-to:from:date :message-id:subject:to:cc; bh=T5oB2NjoSFuJhQGoBiKdkhQzjPQ3pim8KR0M5hkBElM=; b=JgRNx8LQ2MXc83kS78qZjYhTYK7lPAy6xoYgW80wEPPBSE9daZ0MzmlOuxe/nZ2rM3 oRoaVo2nicIuEZgt7yo9ABYXyqMCw9kiSL22G5KWp7fe3kRt2jQ4t2K8e2MXQaRC16IJ Qc5yZ/Pw3Gg2+iRVdNzfO2Eoyn+vwwu1GGz5V853vE8LAkogUPRJ3Y9mEkdJkl9YbON8 sRycLnK7Fo8TVie/j9+yMFpT6w0WmvXd+6uTQFrAE9FiF51cvgd7qpt8lGzv/WYE+wLs 6E5lu5OsiT4S6A41+m7JgDY5EKzOy36DoL5kWhRqNk1bWpN/L+38lHhtds15imtjFdfu PU9Q== X-Gm-Message-State: APjAAAVgsbs5LBZDf3E4EDDb1bRvJs1Hv9PSJqGKSlStbyZN+dDl9BfR FNNJc6xl7DBd52xBPq4Zlu2c0MiIZfk= X-Google-Smtp-Source: APXvYqwMhKbZ8a4yBAtA2MD4bCREbBlpfgdVxjfmPZ3+XXJE4ISdJAoM5HofF4SLE54aaFH9oD2Y6g== X-Received: by 2002:a05:6808:c8:: with SMTP id t8mr9296521oic.46.1574955599802; Thu, 28 Nov 2019 07:39:59 -0800 (PST) Received: from mail-oi1-f180.google.com (mail-oi1-f180.google.com. Mentioned previously problem turned out to come from missing dependencies on a clean build machine, my mistake, sorry :-) Blender-279 requires OpenImageIO18 that is also provided in your redports. Everything else is already in the ports tree. Both Blender-279 + OpenImageIO18 and Blender + OpenImageIO (current) works fine when installed next to each other, no files in conflict, all have valid suffixes. I have created packages for Blender-279 and OpenImageIO18 on one machine, then transferred them to another machine where Blender (2..80) was already installed, no problems, no conflicting files, both works fine when installed next to each other. We can add Blender-279 and OpenImageIO18 to the official FreeBSD Ports Tree please? :-) THANK YOU SO MUCH!! YOU ROX SHANE! =) Tomek ps/2: I can see you are master wizard of 3D Graphics and FreeBSD Ports, if you are interested in Blender 2.80 fork with BGE the project is called UPBGE, here is my porting effort to build on FreeBSD: https://github.com/UPBGE/upbge/issues/1081 :-) -- CeDeROM, SQ7MHZ, http://www.tomek.cedro.info
