I've read through all the threads in this mailing list, but have yet to find a solution that works on my Mac.  Many of the referenced snapshot kernels could not be located.  Building from source yielded the same results as down loaded pre-built images. Any tips or hits would be appreciated. With the G5 you will most likely need to interrupt the process at the loader and inset "set usefdt=1" and possibly "set kern.smp.disabled=1". A specific change was made for powerpc64 that lead to this G5 boot = problem. However, it appears to just have exposed some previously unknown problem = rather than the change itself being wrong. I'm not aware of anyone having = figured out the underlying problem --or even of having figured out a way to = figure it out. I know I've not come up with any ideas so far. So far as I know, = only old PowerMacs show such odd behavior with the change. So for now I base my builds on reverting the change in question. (I = normally use head, including 12 back when it was head.) . . ./sys/powerpc/include/vmparam.h has a definition of = VM_MAX_KERNEL_ADDRESS . I reverted the: #define VM_MAX_KERNEL_ADDRESS 0xe0000007ffffffffUL to be: #define VM_MAX_KERNEL_ADDRESS 0xe0000001c7ffffffUL instead. But, again, I expect that this is a way of sidestepping another problem that has not been found: a hack/workaround instead of a valid, general fix. Disabling smp via the following at the loader prompt seems to avoid the problem without such a change to to VM_MAX_KERNEL_ADDRESS : set kern.smp.disabled=3D1 Nothing else has to be set to my knowledge. But using a single CPU/core has other consequences that may be of note depending on what one wants to do with the G5. [For the following: I believe it only applies to head , not even stable/12: The fix so that usefdt would work at all ( -r341614 ) is for . . ./sys/powerpc/powermac/macgpio.c and has not been merged to stable/12 ( and, so, not to release/12.0.0 ).] As far as I know the following by itself at the loader prompt does not side step the VM_MAX_KERNEL_ADDRESS related problem: set usefdt=3D1 However, usefdt should avoid other issues with mixing use of Apple's OpenFirmware with FreeBSD execution. (It does swap which Ethernet port is 0 vs. 1 as seen in FreeBSD.) So once stable/12 has the update to sys/powerpc/powermac/macgpio.c then usefdt=3D1 would likely be recommended for stable/12 as well. (It will be a while before it shows up in a release/12.?.? .) =3D=3D=3D Mark Millard marklmi at yahoo.com ( dsl-only.net went away in early 2018-Mar) From owner-freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Mon Jan 28 21:52:54 2019 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BF5AF14C0E9B for ; Mon, 28 Jan 2019 21:52:53 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from marklmi@yahoo.com) Received: from sonic310-22.consmr.mail.ne1.yahoo.com (sonic310-22.consmr.mail.ne1.yahoo.com [66.163.186.203]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256 (128/128 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id C7FC381F03 for ; Mon, 28 Jan 2019 21:52:52 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from marklmi@yahoo.com) X-YMail-OSG: BODIb34VM1nhrif0WPMXWzB7JCQHUTv2Y4uolQRHwpUyhtckEd6_MrIyZXK5MxZ 4oDR8bu0nyDuVzZI67sejju53OXsKvs9kz5yAQDOu5i7zZ._xR61_VhxBLHtTtjSJaMP5cYBYpD5 72XyPqM6Wgj92D0TEcVKv_RNpCF9L835E9.HVzF4yejsDtX_yMTZ0R9WwH2PmRJQ_V7UmzZJMXD4 YXnXWHJevH70IFlrZpcOf10zg1P5hkwVm3Gg5nbe3aItGfvkJk7bvIe4RP6AoTiMkeseY2eHNiy2 aoXFCJwn_srRntCiJrjewu_U8.H72LQtsJceaqVTeJfA.RgbGn4VWBh5CIG14n8XSidGbgIaZw9Q T2uw0SgZ8BQBPg7ZnW47iBQq3KMgOin9110BkpfOPDEq98aepPajD7xkmVGcTpQuTv6bYe3txVng JMoFPOX8wBHt_O6Ida2615rdLQIxzNwqTGObM8hs3_Yf0Lr_OTiWch7O_hAy59FjqBKvTItITsfk vlMVJqBJGEK2z5YeO62KviR87ukZfGOgD3SuTkw9u5jO6fUB52Lt8wcEBBoskMwCXEEE3mwyKkny GsSa2JYhJmz7.27rydd3o4Ju2pWh4pvnVYnthAHR6ex3euK2oW1CJtaIosfMbNivOUFhuSL9X_1W gJiaLHapStlrTrSOoR5XwUtWPToGiZj0B5yo.DJAgKsTHxI554Jg1UQLlC0tiGasTl55_FCejlCg vOTujy61R8sTrtgYbKlllDeYzhgyRnyl4L1fI8nMIjqpX6mw742ZMAWq1_cxJPx1NxrGeGUzO0yK DT92dek8ruE2Wkocx.ESPMD3o_IGxzPQ3CLkFMIdFBQy.MFdckk42ZJ4X0KsJuCIPs_CCnFk6v31 pkVyC3NVoubAtjU.E9v6KpkegMzxvclCnx4oesJctLS3qbpidTUughSi0X2wtETBeSnKr4NT99kG V_NTm.4LUcYDElv5iv4fZuOezvzOQvewv6Tf2l9P3MTV9E.VIhktrqlVd6JVJwHmhcuS8eexKcQV 5_1DDuyFkuS4n7bvIiO_4h3IDbQzS71aKl1SGw4p8achhLNKak7YQcavBE8j81p91AxtoMES03g- - Received: from sonic.gate.mail.ne1.yahoo.com by sonic310.consmr.mail.ne1.yahoo.com with HTTP; Mon, 28 Jan 2019 21:52:46 +0000 Received: from c-67-170-167-181.hsd1.or.comcast.net (EHLO [192.168.1.113]) ([67.170.167.181]) by smtp408.mail.ne1.yahoo.com (Oath Hermes SMTP Server) with ESMTPA ID 2b4406e2172d2e79b17922fae54e5102; Mon, 28 Jan 2019 21:42:37 +0000 (UTC) Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Mime-Version: 1.0 (Mac OS X Mail 12.2 \(3445.102.3\)) Subject: Re: Booting and Installing Release 12 on PowerMac G5 "Quad Core" From: Mark Millard In-Reply-To: Date: Mon, 28 Jan 2019 13:42:36 -0800 Cc: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Message-Id: <30652AD4-E660-4888-BAA9-22082A059DB1@yahoo.com> References: <283c5d11-7363-f9e3-48cc-42bd6d036236@gmail.com> To: Curtis Hamilton X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.3445.102.3) X-Rspamd-Queue-Id: C7FC381F03 X-Spamd-Bar: + X-Spamd-Result: default: False [1.91 / 15.00]; RCVD_VIA_SMTP_AUTH(0.00)[]; TO_DN_SOME(0.00)[]; R_SPF_ALLOW(-0.20)[+ptr:yahoo.com]; MV_CASE(0.50)[]; FREEMAIL_FROM(0.00)[yahoo.com]; RCVD_COUNT_THREE(0.00)[3]; DKIM_TRACE(0.00)[yahoo.com:+]; MX_GOOD(-0.01)[cached: mta6.am0.yahoodns.net]; RCPT_COUNT_TWO(0.00)[2]; DMARC_POLICY_ALLOW(-0.50)[yahoo.com,reject]; FREEMAIL_TO(0.00)[gmail.com]; FROM_EQ_ENVFROM(0.00)[]; RCVD_TLS_LAST(0.00)[]; MIME_TRACE(0.00)[0:+]; FREEMAIL_ENVFROM(0.00)[yahoo.com]; ASN(0.00)[asn:36646, ipnet:66.163.184.0/21, country:US]; MID_RHS_MATCH_FROM(0.00)[]; DWL_DNSWL_NONE(0.00)[yahoo.com.dwl.dnswl.org : 127.0.5.0]; ARC_NA(0.00)[]; R_DKIM_ALLOW(-0.20)[yahoo.com:s=s2048]; FROM_HAS_DN(0.00)[]; NEURAL_SPAM_SHORT(0.97)[0.971,0]; NEURAL_HAM_LONG(-0.09)[-0.086,0]; MIME_GOOD(-0.10)[text/plain]; IP_SCORE(0.91)[ip: (2.68), ipnet: 66.163.184.0/21(1.07), asn: 36646(0.86), country: US(-0.08)]; NEURAL_SPAM_MEDIUM(0.62)[0.624,0]; TO_MATCH_ENVRCPT_SOME(0.00)[]; RCVD_IN_DNSWL_NONE(0.00)[203.186.163.66.list.dnswl.org : 127.0.5.0] X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.29 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 28 Jan 2019 21:52:54 -0000 [ For head usefdt=3D1 does work by itself without reverting = VM_MAX_KERNEL_ADDRESS .] On 2019-Jan-27, at 21:57, Mark Millard wrote: > On 2019-Jan-27, at 16:05, Curtis Hamilton = wrote: >=20 >> Is there a recommended solution to booting/installing Release 12 on = the PowerMac G5 "Quad Core"? >>=20 >> I've read through all the threads in this mailing list, but have yet = to find a solution that works on my Mac. I just did not list them all. >=20 Contintued use has produced mostly hangups during booting when starting from power-off (instead of shutdown -r now). I've also seen that the buf*daemon at shutdown can be a mix of ones that hang up and others that reach Done normally. I've switched to a debug kernel build in order to see what it reports. (So far nothing interesting.) The boot-time hangs for "boot -v" show the last line(s) as "Waking up CPU" messages --but at least one is not displayed. This is the same as without the usefdt=3D1 type of context. It currently seems a rarity that it boots. It looks to me like usefdt=3D1 does little or no good for the problem exposed by the modern VM_MAX_KERNEL_ADDRESS value. =3D=3D=3D Mark Millard marklmi at yahoo.com ( dsl-only.net went away in early 2018-Mar) From owner-freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Tue Jan 29 07:42:32 2019 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 54F5414AF947 for ; Tue, 29 Jan 2019 07:42:32 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from marklmi@yahoo.com) Received: from sonic308-8.consmr.mail.gq1.yahoo.com (sonic308-8.consmr.mail.gq1.yahoo.com [98.137.68.32]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256 (128/128 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 2EFE670B74 for ; Tue, 29 Jan 2019 07:42:31 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from marklmi@yahoo.com) X-YMail-OSG: 1h2CZIgVM1liM32b6RqTV04eqz1lRHWj3Qhu6DhXRFhz9QmEYYoy_tlobKhqv1n SELcm1qW2ZBGEjmhATlpoZvwHWE0rlLcExHKMCT4RuuUIOZzbgFYcxhnWidxQuVYRX1YRELo_xIM 1ah6HScgtJmo3p0L_g63FazKzPotU_67PkNRwhJ9YMioxdp.j7ESmT4PlqAVhhqKy3ECfvNsy.om OQZAc44JeWgQdih_hF8ivzyqu_mhC_VYdZPdIW3vdZTY8pYFMhe1XstF_EyhRKmdPSnTrCcZecG0 2OxAHCPd7Lo.Kx19V9iAm_zk8.7vVyuiMzUw.aWhU1axqmIzyghsbY8_NTobEjDmwRehklEkYaH9 vII_az122l_UHysCnbhhKX4eWUCUcawlTz5KB1F66WvIcfbmqpgumT3MmAF9cCeAEpLoWMnAbAwy yyCZNcShIibQNSOtc7_TbhgxMFy47QUQ6ZOh2GK9xBSGKamSYGSrVmvjbhEdlLuca_f88oVWOHYU MHHHMk.p_ryR_qd4WtTz5yfN6M13s3tJsZSAZBFUdEVXtyTJciO9_yEZQjtzYOmCXckvv0Qkw5tV L7NspHLCTamWBo217wPbH9GO_BAKiZkSfJre2yoUn0klbnsHcbIpJDLYwhnr.N3YcSODHwgjO.c0 PkG2YE32RDmzvbNxQP_n6fajkMIE8A7zF8mylGRujnlz8SVhRS2wxJxB14vhAsvY7XFX3skaVXlH J94D8.7S4ftHfqY5zJlEVroNEuXnVLEbMrJpDJCFnIfsejdZ_KcrRZ8c4u4_2aboFrdDv3KtJUUy SBqvFzVwSbwmNHzsT79EJ3yszhD.DHg5ka98cHAScm9IxtRqmnc4cvBD97aeExoeD6XSnEJ9wsSg l3eygYyIjW_I6V67k0efbwjWONHs.qHQ8PGw_Piac1IvSaThhaBIyl1QR8iudPxzh4FtmEs_bQPL T.sTwOmwPvnl8m5w70hKsYuECQIuyvS_hTsz3_.HcaMqUri3h4lopB8Xzx92Bhoma0HSYt3YWrBO QHSrtGY9CcWzd4W59MiwRTzprIjmE5frPWZlUia1K8WWXndB6h9BRG1Yom9eEdpqRqj8x Received: from sonic.gate.mail.ne1.yahoo.com by sonic308.consmr.mail.gq1.yahoo.com with HTTP; Tue, 29 Jan 2019 07:42:24 +0000 Received: from c-67-170-167-181.hsd1.or.comcast.net (EHLO [192.168.1.113]) ([67.170.167.181]) by smtp409.mail.gq1.yahoo.com (Oath Hermes SMTP Server) with ESMTPA ID 4ee4c5d7e2514b58fd75bcd5b86e2366; Tue, 29 Jan 2019 07:42:22 +0000 (UTC) From: Mark Millard Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Mime-Version: 1.0 (Mac OS X Mail 12.2 \(3445.102.3\)) Subject: Under usefdt=1 type of context for G5 "4 core" (system total): unload then boot /boot/kernel/kernel fails very early with: panic: Translation map has incorrect cell count (260/256) Message-Id: <9A6549AE-46FB-41B9-8F15-9E1AE3E16E2C@yahoo.com> Date: Mon, 28 Jan 2019 23:42:21 -0800 Cc: Justin Hibbits , Nathan Whitehorn To: FreeBSD PowerPC ML X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.3445.102.3) X-Rspamd-Queue-Id: 2EFE670B74 X-Spamd-Bar: ++ X-Spamd-Result: default: False [2.40 / 15.00]; RCVD_VIA_SMTP_AUTH(0.00)[]; R_SPF_ALLOW(-0.20)[+ptr:yahoo.com]; MV_CASE(0.50)[]; FREEMAIL_FROM(0.00)[yahoo.com]; RCVD_COUNT_THREE(0.00)[3]; TO_DN_ALL(0.00)[]; DKIM_TRACE(0.00)[yahoo.com:+]; MX_GOOD(-0.01)[cached: mta6.am0.yahoodns.net]; DMARC_POLICY_ALLOW(-0.50)[yahoo.com,reject]; FROM_EQ_ENVFROM(0.00)[]; IP_SCORE(1.22)[ip: (4.92), ipnet: 98.137.64.0/21(0.70), asn: 36647(0.56), country: US(-0.08)]; MIME_TRACE(0.00)[0:+]; FREEMAIL_ENVFROM(0.00)[yahoo.com]; ASN(0.00)[asn:36647, ipnet:98.137.64.0/21, country:US]; MID_RHS_MATCH_FROM(0.00)[]; DWL_DNSWL_NONE(0.00)[yahoo.com.dwl.dnswl.org : 127.0.5.0]; ARC_NA(0.00)[]; R_DKIM_ALLOW(-0.20)[yahoo.com:s=s2048]; FROM_HAS_DN(0.00)[]; RCPT_COUNT_THREE(0.00)[3]; NEURAL_SPAM_SHORT(0.70)[0.703,0]; MIME_GOOD(-0.10)[text/plain]; RCVD_TLS_LAST(0.00)[]; NEURAL_SPAM_MEDIUM(0.80)[0.803,0]; TO_MATCH_ENVRCPT_SOME(0.00)[]; NEURAL_SPAM_LONG(0.18)[0.184,0]; RCVD_IN_DNSWL_NONE(0.00)[32.68.137.98.list.dnswl.org : 127.0.5.0]; FREEMAIL_CC(0.00)[gmail.com] X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.29 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 29 Jan 2019 07:42:32 -0000 [The loader here has been modified to always do the usefdt=1 code. Being a multiple of 5 is important for "acells=3D=3D2" contexts. Going through some of the code, first noting some context: struct ofw_map { cell_t om_va; cell_t om_len; uint64_t om_pa; cell_t om_mode; }; This has 4 fields but one appears to be bigger than cell_t if I understand right. This gets into if: OF_getencprop(OF_finddevice("/"), "#address-cells", &acells, sizeof(acells)); indicates 2 cells for om_pa (via acells=3D=3D2) or just 1 cell. So when acells=3D=3D2 there are 5 cells per, otherwise there are 4. Now to the routine in question: static void moea64_add_ofw_mappings(mmu_t mmup, phandle_t mmu, size_t sz) { struct ofw_map translations[sz/(4*sizeof(cell_t))]; /*>=3D 4 = cells per */ For acells=3D=3D2 the above potentially over allocates translations = some. Later it turns out that if it does that may prevent out of bounds writing into translations . pcell_t acells, trans_cells[sz/sizeof(cell_t)]; It turns out that sz/sizeof(cell_t) at this point ended up as a multiple of 4 but not of 5, despite acells=3D=3D2 being the case. Later this leads to out of bounds accesses for trans_cells . struct pvo_entry *pvo; register_t msr; vm_offset_t off; vm_paddr_t pa_base; int i, j; =20 bzero(translations, sz); OF_getencprop(OF_finddevice("/"), "#address-cells", &acells, sizeof(acells)); This ended up with acells=3D=3D2 --so 5 cells per translation entry. if (OF_getencprop(mmu, "translations", trans_cells, sz) =3D=3D = -1) panic("moea64_bootstrap: can't get ofw translations"); For acells=3D=3D2: sz/sizeof(cell_t) not being a multiple of 5 means either some unused trans_cell entries or access outside the trans_cells array in the loop below, depending on the loop test used. CTR0(KTR_PMAP, "moea64_add_ofw_mappings: translations"); sz /=3D sizeof(cell_t); sz here ended up as 256, not a multiple of 5. for (i =3D 0, j =3D 0; i < sz; j++) { The i < sz test is testing the first of the 4 or 5 being below sz instead of testing the last of the 4 or 5. This leads to out of bounds accesses into trans_cells below for the 256 with acells=3D=3D2 case. It also means that the last translations[j] ends up with some garbage content. translations[j].om_va =3D trans_cells[i++]; translations[j].om_len =3D trans_cells[i++]; translations[j].om_pa =3D trans_cells[i++]; if (acells =3D=3D 2) { translations[j].om_pa <<=3D 32; translations[j].om_pa |=3D trans_cells[i++]; } translations[j].om_mode =3D trans_cells[i++]; } The loop test for the above loop just looks wrong to me for avoid bad accesses. KASSERT(i =3D=3D sz, ("Translations map has incorrect cell count = (%d/%zd)", i, sz)); Having sz [ the original sz/sizeof(cell_t) ] not be a multiple of 5 for acells=3D=3D2 would fail this test even if the loop stopped without going out of bounds on trans_cells (so i=3D=3D255 instead of i=3D=3D260). For the original sz figure having sz/sizeof(cell_t) =3D=3D 256, the = original sz figure was not a multiple of 5 [presuming sizeof(cell_t) is not a multiple of 5]. My guess is that the original sz value was wrong after the unload and boot (reloading) and the loop structure should avoid going out of bounds on trans_cells anyway. > cpuid =3D 0 > time =3D 1 > KDB: stack backtrace: > 0xc000000000f9e kdb_backtrace+0x60 > 0xc000000000f9e vpanic+0x258 > 0xc000000000f9e panic+0x3c > 0xc000000000f9e moea64_late_bootstrap+0x2c0 > 0xc000000000f9e moea64_bootstrap_native+0x20c > 0xc000000000f9e pmap_bootstrap_0xc8 > 0xc000000000f9e powerpc_init+0x440 > 0xc000000000f9efc0: at=20 >=20 > (And that is all.) The below tried to fix the loop to avoid out of bounds trans_cells accesses and to allow my context to not panic for the "multiple of 4 but not of 5" issue for the unload then reload/boot sequence. The bias was for the code changes to be easy to follow, given the earlier commentary. # svnlite diff /usr/src/sys/powerpc/aim/mmu_oea64.c | more = = Index: = /usr/src/sys/powerpc/aim/mmu_oea64.c =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D --- /usr/src/sys/powerpc/aim/mmu_oea64.c (revision 341836) +++ /usr/src/sys/powerpc/aim/mmu_oea64.c (working copy) @@ -502,7 +502,7 @@ register_t msr; vm_offset_t off; vm_paddr_t pa_base; - int i, j; + int i, istep, j; =20 bzero(translations, sz); OF_getencprop(OF_finddevice("/"), "#address-cells", &acells, @@ -512,7 +512,8 @@ =20 CTR0(KTR_PMAP, "moea64_add_ofw_mappings: translations"); sz /=3D sizeof(cell_t); - for (i =3D 0, j =3D 0; i < sz; j++) { + istep =3D (acells =3D=3D 2) ? The > buf*daemon timeouts happen even if the fans have not taken off. >=20 With VM_MAX_KERNEL_ADDRESS reverted or a successful boot with the modern value: Adding CPU 0, hwref=3Dcd38, awake=3D1 Waking up CPU 3 (dev=3Dc480) Adding CPU 3, hwref=3Dc480, awake=3D1 Waking up CPU 2 (dev=3Dc768) Adding CPU 2, hwref=3Dc768, awake=3D1 Waking up CPU 1 (dev=3Dca50) Adding CPU 1, hwref=3Dca50, awake=3D1 SMP: AP CPU #3 launched SMP: AP CPU #2 launched SMP: AP CPU #1 launched Trying to mount root from ufs:/dev/ufs/FBSDG5L2rootfs [rw,noatime]... With the modern VM_MAX_KERNEL_ADDRESS value for a boot attempt that failed, an example (typed from a picture of the screen) is: Adding CPU 0, hwref=3Dcd38, awake=3D1 Waking up CPU 3 (dev=3Dc480) Another is: Adding CPU 0, hwref=3Dcd38, awake=3D1 Waking up CPU 3 (dev=3Dc480) Waking up CPU 2 (dev=3Dc768) (Both examples have no more output.) So CPUs 1..3 do not get "Adding CPU" messages. Also: I do not remember seeing all 3 "Waking up CPU" messages, just 1 or 2 of them. (Sometimes the "Trying to mount root from" message is in the mix as I remember.) One point of difference that is consistently observable for the old vs. modern VM_MAX_KERNEL_ADDRESS values is how many bufspacedaemon-* threads there are: old VM_MAX_KERNEL_ADDRESS value: 0..2 new VM_MAX_KERNEL_ADDRESS value: 0..6 I have had many boot attempts in a row boot for the modern VM_MAX_KERNEL_ADDRESS value, though not as many as the dozens of failures in a row. Highly variable with lots of testing. =3D=3D=3D Mark Millard marklmi at yahoo.com ( dsl-only.net went away in early 2018-Mar) From owner-freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Thu Jan 31 20:20:37 2019 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D13C014B6812 for ; Thu, 31 Jan 2019 20:20:36 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from marklmi@yahoo.com) Received: from sonic303-4.consmr.mail.bf2.yahoo.com (sonic303-4.consmr.mail.bf2.yahoo.com [74.6.131.43]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256 (128/128 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id CAC616FF63 for ; Thu, 31 Jan 2019 20:20:35 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from marklmi@yahoo.com) X-YMail-OSG: 5InRvtIVM1ksPJwUa4WPVm4_b9bEqCPzSal._MHcEqGPJFc1E_TbEAWyB7jLDvK X9JGN_r_btd8cavCOjNLowbWZ2195y7UynaWFDgIbpFX1wS._rL_KLUFCsFsg7GDz1kAtXhI4t2X j6TXU8XWXw97nsLKwl7ayP8rP8dluXsrO_RitFfdRWbQQ_sw5bhYST0TG4FhqmZs3ccOLLnITTNx qFRB2b3VqLOLzgAXp4VqXfA_MfZtnNM7ujl2pLXccLucgz2XaOrxG5ngPTSkmxDVUOZXXuDI6HYq L4FZwa8x4.LYUEybfQxGsg_orruw.KjJc9orEBpyawvBvN.DvHcwYPx2I7NGZvw2QPYdsDC.0n0a .zd8S4g78xx5.yUeBDIHtQV0TbgbHc2._5LG4nAhsu4T0VKCDEgzcRRkR.OW3Wv1KTDhsVr4D1PW 204IYMRdg3jrmAeHFfx5bveHFWw6_2Xas.156Y_KFutm2qrkneMCumy9WCrK03HMbBkMtG26LXXr hfXu5QDPOpArfp_06qFshkCht.uWi77Kl7jNLeULPbn_WYTjUmKHve8b5HEtspLJmmBCHXAZBZCo egdZ_lxcqLFQcfD6MtQ2kubS83TLBznQT.RNcwNA59WecvgKyVTt9AUulevjZdquMqnJPofYHTzJ V9wRg414NmBi.vTCnIKt7tgMDBPTAYg9lkH1XPjGI7hUmYp_JTNNwLV5oETwPuwKQAjdisrc7EJe d3q6H7KFMOrQaXturZ7vB_lXfEU0iDg3cUhXnD0LF8v6j5bnzak20Dug9sPwsLspd6HDMqCfVYG4 STrsxO59x6LsOScfmXDg8axT3frg0mRrn2pftSjUvAX1RYptVRIB4xgkT6d72lv0HqDUwdT1zvK. yLNtYZHnmYp.ippU4dDorEeFhmrTyisyJCgQK7SKOFPPvPCP78qBnM5G3G2LDLkOWRhn07zfTGHD Q9PhavScAEOvv.kVGgDAHUWoj00frn8McgqnC8q80aWBdPC3tPhxDStJk4xx9yzXDB.F0Fv6t_k4 hOXBrF2gKtZGKQbIDwLUmPrAEry86Lr7SlPeSK.Ee20hNfMbigw5o7kNKBuUR1QQHkVARkFE1 Received: from sonic.gate.mail.ne1.yahoo.com by sonic303.consmr.mail.bf2.yahoo.com with HTTP; Thu, 31 Jan 2019 20:20:29 +0000 Received: from c-67-170-167-181.hsd1.or.comcast.net (EHLO [192.168.1.113]) ([67.170.167.181]) by smtp416.mail.bf1.yahoo.com (Oath Hermes SMTP Server) with ESMTPA ID 115375ee010592a23d577a3a0bffc667; Thu, 31 Jan 2019 20:20:28 +0000 (UTC) Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Mime-Version: 1.0 (Mac OS X Mail 12.2 \(3445.102.3\)) Subject: Re: PoerMac G5 "4 core" (system total): some from-power-off booting observations of the modern VM_MAX_KERNEL_ADDRESS value mixed with usefdt=1 From: Mark Millard In-Reply-To: Date: Thu, 31 Jan 2019 12:20:25 -0800 Cc: Justin Hibbits Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Message-Id: <99ECB1C6-0A3A-446B-8699-9FCE00FD3E6F@yahoo.com> References: <2153561F-FE12-4BA0-9856-F75110401AB6@yahoo.com> To: FreeBSD PowerPC ML X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.3445.102.3) X-Rspamd-Queue-Id: CAC616FF63 X-Spamd-Bar: ++ X-Spamd-Result: default: False [2.91 / 15.00]; RCVD_VIA_SMTP_AUTH(0.00)[]; R_SPF_ALLOW(-0.20)[+ptr:yahoo.com]; MV_CASE(0.50)[]; FREEMAIL_FROM(0.00)[yahoo.com]; RCVD_COUNT_THREE(0.00)[3]; TO_DN_ALL(0.00)[]; MX_GOOD(-0.01)[cached: mta6.am0.yahoodns.net]; DKIM_TRACE(0.00)[yahoo.com:+]; RCPT_COUNT_TWO(0.00)[2]; DMARC_POLICY_ALLOW(-0.50)[yahoo.com,reject]; FROM_EQ_ENVFROM(0.00)[]; IP_SCORE(1.44)[ip: (4.74), ipnet: 74.6.128.0/21(1.41), asn: 26101(1.13), country: US(-0.07)]; MIME_TRACE(0.00)[0:+]; FREEMAIL_ENVFROM(0.00)[yahoo.com]; ASN(0.00)[asn:26101, ipnet:74.6.128.0/21, country:US]; MID_RHS_MATCH_FROM(0.00)[]; DWL_DNSWL_NONE(0.00)[yahoo.com.dwl.dnswl.org : 127.0.5.0]; ARC_NA(0.00)[]; R_DKIM_ALLOW(-0.20)[yahoo.com:s=s2048]; FROM_HAS_DN(0.00)[]; NEURAL_SPAM_SHORT(0.57)[0.566,0]; MIME_GOOD(-0.10)[text/plain]; RCVD_TLS_LAST(0.00)[]; NEURAL_SPAM_MEDIUM(0.78)[0.780,0]; TO_MATCH_ENVRCPT_SOME(0.00)[]; NEURAL_SPAM_LONG(0.63)[0.631,0]; RCVD_IN_DNSWL_NONE(0.00)[43.131.6.74.list.dnswl.org : 127.0.5.0]; FREEMAIL_CC(0.00)[gmail.com] X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.29 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 31 Jan 2019 20:20:37 -0000 [Adding sysctl -a output of some of differences for old vs. modern VM_MAX_KERNEL_ADDRESS figures being in use. I'm reducing the OS memory and adding a trap in the code to identify divergences between PCB flags and SRR1 flags when leaving kernel space. Also building in the 32G machine with the trap change in order to identify = the code being executed. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Fri Feb 1 18:32:29 2019 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 643FB14BCC44 for ; Fri, 1 Feb 2019 18:32:29 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (mailman.ysv.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::50:5]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E74F1746FC for ; Fri, 1 Feb 2019 18:32:28 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) id A6D5614BCC43; Fri, 1 Feb 2019 18:32:28 +0000 (UTC) Delivered-To: ppc@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 943EB14BCC42 for ; Fri, 1 Feb 2019 18:32:28 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org (mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:3]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org", Issuer "Let's Encrypt Authority X3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 21ECE746E8 for ; Fri, 1 Feb 2019 18:32:28 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 0D4F31D3D2 for ; Fri, 1 Feb 2019 18:32:27 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id x11IWQqn089297 for ; Fri, 1 Feb 2019 18:32:26 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: (from www@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id x11IWQHn089296 for ppc@FreeBSD.org; Fri, 1 Feb 2019 18:32:26 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: www set sender to bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: ppc@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 233377] [PowerPC64] Panic during high disk I/O activity Date: Fri, 01 Feb 2019 18:32:26 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: CURRENT X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Some People X-Bugzilla-Who: leandro.lupori@gmail.com X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: ppc@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.29 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 01 Feb 2019 18:32:29 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D233377 --- Comment #9 from Leandro Lupori --- r343616 seems to fix this issue, based on the commit description and in my investigations.
