In most cases the network interface still worked, despite the MAC being different of what was specified to QEMU, but when some other host or DHCP server expected a specific MAC, this would fail. This change fixes this by shifting right by 2 the local-mac-address read = from device tree, if its length is 6 instead of 8, as observed in QEMU DT, that always presents a 6 bytes value for this property. I just yesterday updated the wiki article: https://wiki.freebsd.org/powerpc/Raptor/Blackbird based on my experiences with the new box sitting at my left elbow :-) So, it's possible to make it work. Our settings appear _almost_ identical. OTOH that article still has the instructions I was given to set up remote access (at Integricloud). So, I *did* do the 'ifconfig enP4p1s0f2' dance, whether or not it was neccessary. So I would either try that, or set Network to "DHCP on a specific interface", which I think I had to specify, as well. Let me know what works for you and I will update the wiki article. I expect we will have more users joining us. mcl From owner-freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Sat Jul 6 20:06:08 2019 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 220F015D12F5 for ; Sat, 6 Jul 2019 20:06:08 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from tuexen@freebsd.org) Received: from drew.franken.de (drew.ipv6.franken.de [IPv6:2001:638:a02:a001:20e:cff:fe4a:feaa]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client CN "*.franken.de", Issuer "COMODO RSA Domain Validation Secure Server CA" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id B094875098 for ; Sat, 6 Jul 2019 20:06:07 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from tuexen@freebsd.org) Received: from [IPv6:2a02:8109:1140:c3d:4845:e2f:c458:c640] (unknown [IPv6:2a02:8109:1140:c3d:4845:e2f:c458:c640]) (Authenticated sender: macmic) by mail-n.franken.de (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id B56AA721E281A; Sat, 6 Jul 2019 22:05:55 +0200 (CEST) Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Mime-Version: 1.0 (Mac OS X Mail 12.4 \(3445.104.11\)) Subject: Re: autobooting FreeBSD on Black Bird From: Michael Tuexen In-Reply-To: <20190706181345.GB4111@lonesome.com> Date: Sat, 6 Jul 2019 22:05:54 +0200 Cc: FreeBSD PowerPC ML Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-Id: <9D0BD037-29F5-46CB-AF90-EE4C0572C625@freebsd.org> References: <0694EB91-05BD-4E98-BE6C-B1114D7DAE83@freebsd.org> <20190706181345.GB4111@lonesome.com> To: Mark Linimon X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.3445.104.11) X-Spam-Status: No, score=-2.9 required=5.0 tests=ALL_TRUSTED,BAYES_00 autolearn=disabled version=3.4.1 X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 3.4.1 (2015-04-28) on mail-n.franken.de X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.29 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 06 Jul 2019 20:06:08 -0000 > On 6. So, I *did* do the 'ifconfig enP4p1s0f2' > dance, whether or not it was neccessary. I didn't download the image on the host, but on a separate computer and then created a USB stick. However, this didn't work since I could not get USB to work. So I used a DVD (after adding the DVD reader to the Black Bird) and could install FreeBSD from there. FreeBSD also sees no USB at all. First, I ran it headless and talked to petitboot via obmc-console-client. I think that's how I did the actual install and config but I did not keep sufficiently detailed notes. I *do* know that I used the USB stick for the install image, no matter when I did it. Later, I plugged in kbd/mouse/monitor and have since been booting through that method. (That's how I learned the trick of "you can't use k/m/m unless you boot petitboot via that method.) I'm starting to worry that you have a damaged board. Try it with k/m/m and see what happens. mcl From owner-freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Sat Jul 6 23:05:44 2019 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 29CB215D5748 for ; Sat, 6 Jul 2019 23:05:44 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from linimon@lonesome.com) Received: from mail.soaustin.net (mail.soaustin.net [18.222.6.11]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client CN "mail.soaustin.net", Issuer "Let's Encrypt Authority X3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 5BD5F852EB; Sat, 6 Jul 2019 23:05:43 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from linimon@lonesome.com) Received: from lonesome.com (unknown [18.188.142.31]) by mail.soaustin.net (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id 140A21FCD0; Sat, 6 Jul 2019 23:05:42 +0000 (UTC) Date: Sat, 6 Jul 2019 23:05:41 +0000 From: Mark Linimon To: Michael Tuexen Cc: FreeBSD PowerPC ML Subject: Re: autobooting FreeBSD on Black Bird Message-ID: <20190706230540.GA18745@lonesome.com> References: <0694EB91-05BD-4E98-BE6C-B1114D7DAE83@freebsd.org> <20190706181345.GB4111@lonesome.com> <9D0BD037-29F5-46CB-AF90-EE4C0572C625@freebsd.org> <20190706203613.GA11399@lonesome.com> <20190706210858.GA12978@lonesome.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20190706210858.GA12978@lonesome.com> User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.21 (2010-09-15) X-Rspamd-Queue-Id: 5BD5F852EB X-Spamd-Bar: / Authentication-Results: mx1.freebsd.org X-Spamd-Result: default: False [-0.26 / 15.00]; ARC_NA(0.00)[]; RCVD_VIA_SMTP_AUTH(0.00)[]; NEURAL_HAM_MEDIUM(-0.59)[-0.586,0]; FROM_HAS_DN(0.00)[]; TO_MATCH_ENVRCPT_ALL(0.00)[]; NEURAL_HAM_LONG(-0.91)[-0.914,0]; MIME_GOOD(-0.10)[text/plain]; DMARC_NA(0.00)[lonesome.com]; AUTH_NA(1.00)[]; NEURAL_SPAM_SHORT(0.79)[0.789,0]; IP_SCORE(-0.24)[ip: (0.03), ipnet: 18.220.0.0/14(0.14), asn: 16509(-1.34), country: US(-0.06)]; TO_DN_ALL(0.00)[]; RCVD_IN_DNSWL_MED(-0.20)[11.6.222.18.list.dnswl.org : 127.0.5.2]; MX_GOOD(-0.01)[cached: mail.soaustin.net]; RCPT_COUNT_TWO(0.00)[2]; R_SPF_NA(0.00)[]; FROM_EQ_ENVFROM(0.00)[]; R_DKIM_NA(0.00)[]; MIME_TRACE(0.00)[0:+]; ASN(0.00)[asn:16509, ipnet:18.220.0.0/14, country:US]; MID_RHS_MATCH_FROM(0.00)[]; RCVD_TLS_ALL(0.00)[]; RCVD_COUNT_TWO(0.00)[2] X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.29 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 06 Jul 2019 23:05:44 -0000 Now that I look at it, I see the following in the log (when I interrupt the boot): [enP4p1s0f0] Processing DHCP lease response (ip: 192.160.235.178) [enP4p1s0f0] Probing from base tftp://192.160.235.99/pxelinux.cfg/ [enP4p1s0f0] PXE autoconfiguration failed So somehow I haven't set something to tell it "you aren't going to find pxelinux.cfg there so don't bother". mcl
