I poked around /usr/src/sys and found multiple WTF comments. The reason I ask is i have Samsung EVO 860s plugged into a Dell R720 (via LSI 9361 which is where mrsas comes from (also have mfi disabled)) and seeing da0 speed of 150.000MB/sec in dmesg output is a bit strange. I hacked the source and moved it to 600 and sure enough it now reports 600MB/sec on boot up. I haven't benchmarked old vs new yet because the system in question can't be rebooted for a while. So is the problem here that before ntpd is running and has the chance to call setrlimit(), aslr has already created a large stack gap? If so, it seems to me that aslr and setrlimit(RLIMIT_STACK, ...) are never going to work right together. Even if the default stack gap were much smaller, code using RLIMIT_STACK is going to end up with a stack smaller than it asked for because the gap it has no way of knowing about uses up some part (or all of) the limited space. If the default gap were 64K or less, things would be much more likely to work accidentally (and we might never have noticed this situtation), but they still wouldn't be working correctly. Is it possible for the code on the kernel side to add the requested limit to the gap size to generate a result that gives the caller the usable stack size they asked for? -- Ian From owner-freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Tue Sep 10 17:48:51 2019 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4373ADEB0D for ; Tue, 10 Sep 2019 17:48:51 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from kostikbel@gmail.com) Received: from kib.kiev.ua (kib.kiev.ua [IPv6:2001:470:d5e7:1::1]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 46SXZq09pzz3JSX; Tue, 10 Sep 2019 17:48:50 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from kostikbel@gmail.com) Received: from tom.home (kib@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by kib.kiev.ua (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTPS id x8AHmfiV010146 (version=TLSv1.3 cipher=TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 bits=256 verify=NO); Tue, 10 Sep 2019 20:48:44 +0300 (EEST) (envelope-from kostikbel@gmail.com) DKIM-Filter: OpenDKIM Filter v2.10.3 kib.kiev.ua x8AHmfiV010146 Received: (from kostik@localhost) by tom.home (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id x8AHmfFV010145; Tue, 10 Sep 2019 20:48:41 +0300 (EEST) (envelope-from kostikbel@gmail.com) X-Authentication-Warning: tom.home: kostik set sender to kostikbel@gmail.com using -f Date: Tue, 10 Sep 2019 20:48:41 +0300 From: Konstantin Belousov To: Ian Lepore Cc: Trond =?utf-8?Q?Endrest=C3=B8l?= , emaste@freebsd.org, freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Subject: Re: ntpd doesn't like ASLR on stable/12 post-r350672 Message-ID: <20190910174841.GC2559@kib.kiev.ua> References: <20190824204114.GG71821@kib.kiev.ua> <20190824222817.GJ71821@kib.kiev.ua> <20190825120342.GN71821@kib.kiev.ua> <2a0ad34a5c57489732296e43d50b42b5f3923f96.camel@freebsd.org> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit In-Reply-To: <2a0ad34a5c57489732296e43d50b42b5f3923f96.camel@freebsd.org> User-Agent: Mutt/1.12.1 (2019-06-15) X-Spam-Status: No, score=-1.0 required=5.0 tests=ALL_TRUSTED,BAYES_00, DKIM_ADSP_CUSTOM_MED,FORGED_GMAIL_RCVD,FREEMAIL_FROM, NML_ADSP_CUSTOM_MED autolearn=no autolearn_force=no version=3.4.2 X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 3.4.2 (2018-09-13) on tom.home X-Rspamd-Queue-Id: 46SXZq09pzz3JSX X-Spamd-Bar: ----- Authentication-Results: mx1.freebsd.org; none X-Spamd-Result: default: False [-6.00 / 15.00]; NEURAL_HAM_MEDIUM(-1.00)[-0.999,0]; NEURAL_HAM_LONG(-1.00)[-1.000,0]; REPLY(-4.00)[] X-BeenThere: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.29 Precedence: list List-Id: Production branch of FreeBSD source code List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 10 Sep 2019 17:48:51 -0000 On Tue, Sep 10, 2019 at 10:50:33AM -0600, Ian Lepore wrote: > On Sun, 2019-08-25 at 15:03 +0300, Konstantin Belousov wrote: > > On Sun, Aug 25, 2019 at 12:40:22AM +0200, Trond Endrestøl wrote: > > > On Sun, 25 Aug 2019 01:28+0300, Konstantin Belousov wrote: > > > > > > > On Sun, Aug 25, 2019 at 12:19:43AM +0200, Trond Endrestøl wrote: > > > > > On Sat, 24 Aug 2019 23:41+0300, Konstantin Belousov wrote: > > > > > > > I tried changing command="/usr/sbin/${name}" to > > > > > > > command="/usr/bin/proccontrol -m aslr -s disable /usr/sbin/${name}" in > > > > > > > /etc/rc.d/ntpd, but that didn't go well. > > > > > > > > > > > > If you set kern.elf64.aslr.stack_gap to zero, does it help ? > > > > > > > > > > That helped. Sort of, yes. There is a UI problem with the control for the gap, and I am not sure how to fix it. > > If the default gap were 64K or less, things would be much more likely > to work accidentally (and we might never have noticed this situtation), > but they still wouldn't be working correctly. I do not see a way to account for the gap in RLIMIT_STACK adjustment. It should be handled in cooperation with the user code. When program does adjust RLIMIT_STACK in so radical way, e.g. setting it to 64k, it must know a lot about execution environment. Any attempt to boot r352200 results in the system just sitting there after displaying the normal "Trying to mount root from ufs:/dev/da0p3 [rw]..." message. Nothing further, not even after a half hour. The console is non- responsive (not that I'd really expect anything, but...). This persists across multiple resets, power cycles, etc. Booting the previous r352025 works fine, as expected. After firmware upgrade and moving to FreeBSD stable (unsure which is triggering this) i can no longer set connected mode on linux. There are a lot of posts that say you have to diabled enhanced iboip mode via a modules.conf setting but the driver doesn't have any idea what that is. echoing connnected to mode file throws a write error. I poked around in linux source but like i'm not even level 1 fighter on C. i'm like generic NPC that says hi at the gates. > Those are my module building scripts on the wiki. This moved me up to 10-12 gig/sec, nothing like the change to ethernet which i can now fill the pipe from the looks of it. Also note a single connection doesn't do more then 25ishgig/sec. Back to SATA being the bottle neck but at least if its coming out of the cache there should be more then enough network IO. Oh one last thing, i thought i read somewhere that you needed to have a switch to do ethernet mode. This doesn't seem to be the case. I haven't shutdown opensm yet but i'll try that later as i'm assuming i no longer need that. w00t!
