Tell your sys admin to rip his/her/its head out of his/her/its behind;
printer administration on FreeBSD is simple.
Now, on to your other problems. If the Sun is running SunOS, you should
be able to look at /etc/printcap on the Sun and get all of the information
you need to setup your /etc/printcap. A good book on UNIX administration,
such as Seebas et al, will help in this area.
If your Sun is running Solaris, you can probably still find the
information, but the SVR4 line printer system in nearly indecipherable
for people who've been using it for years (like me), let alone a novice.
The pertinent question to ask your sys admin (before you do the bit about
his/her/its behind) is to ask of there is an "lpd" print queue for it.
Then setup your printcap file, as others have so aptly demonstrated,
to point to the print queue.
BTW, you don't need to worry about converting text to postscript for
your HP printer; they all default to working like a standard HP printer
until they see something that looks like a postscript job.
