Personally, I prefer using the Microstar K7 boards to the Asus. I've
got an Asus K7M with an Athlon 700 in it, and a couple different
Microstar boards with 650's in them. Price/performance ratio I'd go with
the Microstar ($175 retail) over the Asus ($230 retail).
As far as a cheap PCI video card goes, something that works well with
X; I'd reccomend you find yourself an ATI Mach64 based PCI card. I've
used them almost exclusively with X, they work great, and they retail
for like $40-$80.
For NIC cards, I tend to lean towards Intel, or the cheap realtek (and
clones). I don't paticularily care for a lot of the 3COM pci cards, but
thats just my opinion. For the most part, cheap good old $20 NE2000 PCI
(realtek/rl0) cards work pretty good.
	That's my 2 cents anyhow.
