See commit message for Rev 1.71 of if_xl.c: seems to be a known problem
with some 3com cards, especially when receiving a lot of packets. It's
funny to note that this problem is even not fixed in Win$ drivers !!. A
workaround is to set them to 10Mb/s, half-dup.
