The answers I have seen posted say to edit your /etc/XF86Config file
(the Modes line of the Display subsection of the Screen section).
Another way is to invoke X using more bits per plane for color.

        startx -- "-bpp 15"
or      startx -- "-bpp 16"
or      startx -- "-bpp 32"

instead of the default 8.
