I removed a 256-MB RAM module, equalizing the RAM to 1 GB per channel, and the machine now operates in dual-channel mode. On boot, [drm] still reports 0MB, but the i810 driver in xorg sees the kernel reporting positive memory, and I830CheckAvailableMemory finds almost 2GB available. When I wrote that I was using the same hardware as with 6.1 in 2006, I had forgotten about adding RAM in the interim. (I had not run 6.1 since the great xorg upgrade last spring, and I skipped 6.2.) At that time I had a single 256-MB module operating in single-channel mode -- apparently having the second channel empty did not create the same problem I've had recently. It seems odd that the RAM would make a difference, but I confirmed the workaround by re-installing the 256-MB module, and again lost DRI; I removed it once more, and DRI returned.
