Actually, I think, it was always possible due to how its contents was
parsed with grep in bsd.port.mk. It is the ability to add templates,
that is a fairly recent (3 years?) feature.

It then took me several years of on-and-off "flame wars" to
shatter the surprisingly deep seated (and wrong) perception, that
package-dependencies will break if the shlib number are omitted.

Many maintainers still would not omit them causing a lot of gratuitious
upgrades. Probably, because the examples in the handbook don't show it.

But the gnome-meisters should know better...
