When I kldload snd_driver, the only thing that I see is my video card in /dev/sndstat. Sometimes my soundcard will work and it's snd_hda (which is apparently built into the kernel), but it's not actually working now. Any ideas what might be causing this? With NetBSD, I can look under //stand , always see i386 or amd64, but I don't see anything so good or dependable with FreeBSD. /etc/motd doesn't always show this information. uname only shows the actively running version. In my case, I use UFS and GPT, so FreeBSD and NetBSD can read each other's partitions with no disklabel incompatibilities. Otherwise, you can run strings(1) on the kernel binary which is typically in /boot/kernel/kernel -- the version identification stuff appears near the end of quite a lot of output from that. Note that if you're using freebsd-update(8), the user land version from freebsd-version(1) may be a few patch levels ahead of the version from the kernel binary. It depends if the most resent security patches have affected the kernel or not. It was non-obvious, I wouldn't have thought of it. It works not only from active installation but from any OS installation that can read the FreeBSD partition. I even tried it on a NetBSD kernel, but that did not show the version. A default FreeBSD 11.0 /etc/pam.d/su file contains the following lines: auth sufficient pam_rootok.so no_warn auth sufficient pam_self.so no_warn auth requisite pam_group.so no_warn group=wheel root_only fail_safe ruser auth include system Also LDAP users belonging to another group, say `remotewheel', should be allowed to make `su root'. pam_group(8) seems not to allow multiple choices for the option `group', so a line for each allowed group must be included. Also, the lines should be `sufficient', because the success of one line automatically must exclude the other. I made these modifications: auth sufficient pam_rootok.so no_warn auth sufficient pam_self.so no_warn auth sufficient pam_group.so no_warn group=remotewheel root_only fail_safe ruser auth sufficient pam_group.so no_warn group=wheel root_only fail_safe ruser auth include system but with this configuration, the root password of the local system is never asked. It should, instead. After having verified that the user who makes `su root' belongs to `remotewheel' or `wheel', the system should ask the root password. How is it possible to configure PAM this way? Thank you anyway, Rocky From owner-freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Tue May 9 16:57:12 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-questions@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 90175D6533B for ; Next, I want to update to 12.0-current on another partition. You could possibly upgrade 10.0 by source to 11.0-STABLE or RELEASE, or you might need to do this by steps. I have a big hard drive, 3 TB, using GPT, so have space to spare for partitions, save the old installation until I get the new built up. I don't know about your hard drive configuration and space, but diskspace needs have escalated with recent versions of FreeBSD, as have compiling times. You could try to rebuild all ports using portupgrade, portmaster or synth, or you could make a list of installed ports, delete all, and rebuild from the beginning. I haven't used freebsd-update recently so don't know how that would work, though you could try if you don't want to rebuild from source. Stopping devd. Writing entropy file:. Writing early boot entropy file:/etc/rc.shutdown: WARNING: write failed (read-only fs?) Terminated . Trying to mount root from ufs:/dev/ggate0 []... Obviously this doesnt work as init kills the ggate0 devices backend ggatec process when rerooting. In init.c for reroot: error = kill(-1, SIGKILL); From kill (2) man page: If pid is -1: If the user has super-user privileges, the signal is sent to all processes excluding system processes (with P_SYSTEM flag set) ... Is it possible to set a userland programs p_flag to P_SYSTEM somehow? Or is it possible/sensible to edit init to accept a pid as an argument not to kill when rerooting? Or is this just not feasible without hacking init as in this idea:https://github.com/freqlabs/nbd-init From owner-freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Sat May 13 22:23:28 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-questions@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 30640D66BCD for ; Sat, 13 May 2017 22:23:28 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from chris@monochrome.org) Received: from mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (mailman.ysv.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::50:5]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1F8E2388 for ; Sat, 13 May 2017 22:23:28 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from chris@monochrome.org) Received: by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) id 1C26ED66BCA; Sat, 13 May 2017 22:23:28 +0000 (UTC) Delivered-To: questions@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1A285D66BC8 for ; Sat, 13 May 2017 22:23:28 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from chris@monochrome.org) Received: from mail.monochrome.org (host-209-190-254-14.client.atlantech.net [209.190.254.14]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client CN "mail", Issuer "mail" (not verified)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 607B5387 for ; Sat, 13 May 2017 22:23:25 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from chris@monochrome.org) Received: from [192.168.1.11] (tripel [192.168.1.11]) by mail.monochrome.org (8.14.9/8.14.9) with ESMTP id v4DMI6lk047411 for ; Sat, 13 May 2017 18:18:07 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from chris@monochrome.org) Date: Sat, 13 May 2017 18:18:06 -0400 (EDT) From: Chris Hill To: FreeBSD Questions List Subject: Printer advice Message-ID: User-Agent: Alpine 2.20 (BSF 67 2015-01-07) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset=US-ASCII X-BeenThere: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.23 Precedence: list List-Id: User questions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 13 May 2017 22:23:28 -0000 Hi list, I wonder if anyone can offer advice on a new printer. My old HP 4550N has finally given up the ghost after more than 16 years of semi-faithful service. I'm looking for a color laser printer with ethernet interface and Postscript comprehension. I'm currently looking at the HP M553n and the Xerox Phaser 6515DN, but if you have other suggestions, ideas, caveats... I'd love to hear them.
