New test, the machine is now upgraded to FreeBSD 8.1-stable:
tingo@kg-v2$ uname -a
FreeBSD kg-v2.kg4.no 8.1-STABLE FreeBSD 8.1-STABLE #3: Thu Sep 16 22:18:48
CEST 2010 root@kg-v2.kg4.no:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC amd64
Perl is upgraded to 5.10 (and all ports depnding on it reinstalled as per
/usr/ports/UPDATING):
root@kg-v2# portversion -v | grep ^perl
perl-5.10.1_2 = up-to-date with port
perltidy-20090616 = up-to-date with port

the latest version of gsnan2pdf is installed:
root@kg-v2# portversion -v | grep gscan2pdf
gscan2pdf-0.9.31 = up-to-date with port

When I start gscan2pdf, I get this:
tingo@kg-v2$ gscan2pdf
