But it kills X for no obvious reason.

Yes, I've read the thread about this TrueType bug, but once I did
nothing, and X xrashed and xdm showed up. Sometimes I can just browse
the web, read mail, do some work, view some .ps files and everything is
fine for some minutes / an hour, sometimes I just log in, start my MUA
and *boom* (without pressing a key), xdm greets me again...
