Fron that description, it looks like you don't have a window
manager started - is that possible?

It could also be that if you are using a window manager, its
settings have been corrupted.

The log file does not show any error related to what you're
describing. However, have you verified that you did install
the required graphics driver for your card? (I don't know
which one that should be, as you didn't mention brand and
model of your graphics card.)

For further information, always have a look at .xsession-errors
in your home directory. This file contains all the scary things
you don't want to know. ;-)

Sidenote:

In order to move a window without a window manager, you can
try to press the ALT key, then hold down the left mouse button
inside the window you want to move, and then move it. Resizing
is also possible with ALT + right mouse button. (I'm not sure
if this functionality works without a window manager, but I
found it works with all window managers I've tested so far,
so it _might_ be possible that this is an independent function
provided by X. Oh, and it's very convenient.)
