Thank you for fixing this quickly!

As for not putting things in stable, ever, that is unfortunate.

I try to merge my changes back to the active stable branches when it makes
sense to do so.  Otherwise, end users won't get the benefit of the change u=
ntil
years down the road.  Or, someone else has to see and understand my changes
well enough to merge them.
