In French, possibly, he's talking about an entirely different word,
émail (note the accent), a material used to glaze ceramics:

I don't think there's room for confusion: if I say (in whatever
language) "I'm sending you an email" it is clear what I mean.

Grepping through my mailbox, it looks like the French language mails
use "email" and "e-mail" equally often (after weeding out redundancy
in senders, around 8 examples of each); whereas, in English, "email"
is over three times more common than "e-mail"...
