That sounds like a good command to use, but don't I have to use the -L swit=
ch hence the filesystem is live? What about the restore method the same not=
ation would apply, right? Have you use this methodology yourself or would y=
ou recomend using another method?

Dump is used to back up a file system and can write that data to a file. It=
 doesn't have to write to a raw device. To dump /home to /backup, do someth=
ing like "dump 0auf /backup/home.dump /home".Frem.
