How would you determine or change the mode? (dmesg? boot -v? atacontrol?
pciconf? Or is it a BIOS setup thing?)

Sounds interesting... I've got an Asus P4C800 (i875 w/ICH5) and SATA
(Seagate Barracuda ST3120026AS and Western Digital Raptor WD360GD) but
haven't tested the latest code yet -- worked fine with the build from about
10 days ago, FWIW.
