Did you check the ath(4) man page to see if your particular piece of 
hardware is supported on FreeBSD 8.3?
      The ath driver supports all Atheros Cardbus and PCI cards, except 
      that are based on the AR5005VL chipset.

I'm running:
box0=; uname -a
FreeBSD 9.1-RC2 FreeBSD 9.1-RC2 #0 r241133: Tue Oct 2 
17:11:45 UTC 2012  i386

And my atheros card is supported.

box0=; dmesg | grep ath
