It's a lot even if only 2/3 are real libtool .la files. A major producer of this mess is kde: (10) netchild@ttyp2 % grep kde /tmp/la-files|wc -l 776 I expect them to take ~700k on disk. As long as you can't use USE_LIBTOOL (e.g. because we only have libtool 1.3.4 and no libtool 1.4), you at least can rm them in post-install if you don't have a better idea. I have a report from someone who has 134k of those useless (for us) files.
