It's a > joke. 1 gb would be comfortable for MS SQL, esp since memory is so cheap now. That was my feeling. If the machine started to swap, there isn't enough memory. Given that it's dirt cheap at the moment (I can get 256MB for A$55.00) I'd be loading the box with heaps of memory. You do not want the box to swap.
