In either case, I'd cvsup your src tree with tag=RELENG_5_4, and follow the handbook kernel building instructions step by step. Putting options SMP there should work, but I don't remember if it was already there and just commented out or not. Here's what I have in my config: # Enable Multiple CPU Support options SMP device apic # I/O APIC After you have the latest sources and those two lines in your config, follow the build and install process from the handbook.
