My guess would be that the X server is trying to scale the fonts from
the 75dpi directory instead of using the URW or Type 1 ones.

I use the following in my XF86Config:

FontPath	"/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled"
FontPath	"/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled"
FontPath	"/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/URW"
