hw.snd.default_unit=1  <-- This has fixed everything, from the looks of 
it. Not 100% sure what =1 means, but I have sound now.
No line in/rec/CD volume controls, but working on that.

Mixer vol      is currently set to  75:75
Mixer pcm      is currently set to  75:75
Mixer mix      is currently set to   0:0

Still have to fix this.
