Just as a BTW; I have a horrible suspicion that something is broken in the
dynamic linker.  I've found one program (xpdf) that fails when dynamically
linked, but works when statically linked.  I do not yet understand what
is going on but I'm pretty sure the runtime binding is corrupting function
call state.
