Inetd is sometimes called the `super server daemon' since it listens on
ports listed in /etc/inetd.conf for connections, and when they come in, it
starts the program specified on the port's line on that port.  

portmapper is used for RPC (Remote Procedure Call) services to attach a
service to a network port.

Hint:  Type `man <program>' to find out what <program> does.
