For more information on how the ports collection works, see <http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/ports.html>. You will probably be most interested in the "What to do when a port does not work" section. You could also ask the port's maintainer (jmz@FreeBSD.org) and ask him if he has any plans to upgrade the port.
