If they want to, they can detect that there's more than one computer using that link. They just need to look at the TCP sequence numbers. This way they can associate TCP packets with their individual originating hosts. If they see more than one group of sequentially increasing TCP sequence numbers they know that you're cheating. Whether they really care about it as long as you're not causing excessive network traffic or other trouble is a different matter. The only way to really hide your computers is to block direct Internet connections and instead use proxy software on a gateway server for each and every service. IMHO, quite an effort for probably just a couple of bucks saved. Larger companies do this, but for security reasons and also to control what their employees do on the Internet. You should take ad8 out of the array first. I don't think so, /dev/ad8 has no problem and is actually in active use. Let me be more precise here: The "system" (/, /tmp, /usr and /var) is mounted on a mirror represented by /dev/ar0 made with /dev/ad4 and /dev/ad6. The "data" (/home) was previously mounted on the device /dev/ar1 which was made with /dev/ad8 and /dev/ad10. Because /dev/ad10 seems to have a problem I made a backup, broke the mirror seen as /dev/ar1 and simply put /home on /dev/ad8 - freshly restored. >> Because the problematic disk is not actually used, I can try some >> commands on it if someone think it may be interesting. > On the hardware side, you should look for some diagnostic tool from the > manufacturer. Recommend you update as a matter of priority. In order to generate the sendmail.cf that you need, the command to use is: # cd /etc/mail # m4 -D_CF_DIR=3D/usr/share/sendmail/cf/ /usr/share/sendmail/cf/m4/cf.m= 4 foo.mc > foo.cf assuming that you have a load of sendmail related .m4 files under /usr/share/sendmail/cf -- you may have to substitute /usr/src/contrib/sendmail/cf instead. Then, once you're happy that it's generated a reasonable sendmail configuration file, copy foo.cf to sendmail.cf and restart sendmail. I am trying to integrate a firewall in my network, based on 5.2.1.Release and Ipfilter. I actually had everything working, and did something that I think caused my problem. I tried to ssh into my firewall and I accidentally used the wrong interface. Instead of connecting to the NIC connected to the LAN, I tried to connect to the outside interface. Now, somehow there is an option for VLAN when I type ifconfig. Right under the line for rl0 I see this: options=8 What is this, and what does it mean. How do I get rid of it? I tried to do ifconfig rl0 destroy, but that doesn't work. How can I recreate the rl0 interface without the VLAN option? I could really use some help on this one! Any advice is appreciated! It may be that if your FreeBSD box gets assigned an IPv6 address it assumes it should use IPv6 to do the install. However most networking kit of the sort you'ld use at home doesn't understand IPv6 yet, so won't pass the traffic. Can you try the installation, and instead of using the settings PPP gives you automatically, configure the settings manually -- use the same data as you got from PPP (except for the IPv6 address, obviously), or whatever your ISP recommends. The other alternative would be to do a minimal installation from the mini ISO image, which will get you a bare bones but working FreeBSD system, then: # pkg_add -r cvsup-without-gui and proceed to grab the system sources and the ports with cvsup. And then spend a few days building and installing everything you ned. Once you've got the minimal system installed you'll be able to configure PPP to do the right thing. So, I guess you've tried all the usual stuff, like kldload'ing the snd.ko driver and checking the dmesg output it generates? What's the output of: # pciconf -lv (that will scan your PCI bus and report verbosely on all of the PCI devices it finds. Usually if it can put a name to a card, then that card is supported.) It's not hopeless if pciconf doesn't recognise your card -- it may be a new revision of a similar piece of kit, with a new PCI ID number, but that would work well enough with one of the existing drivers. However, that would take a small kernel patch to make happen. Or you may be S.O.L. in which case, buying a cheapo soundcard that you know is supported would be your best bet. The default system compiler in recent 5.x is gcc-3.3.3: see http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/contrib/gcc/ChangeLog?rev=3D1= =2E1.1.25&content-type=3Dtext/x-cvsweb-markup It's a slightly modified version of the FSF gcc distribution. However, don't expect too much from simply upgrading the compiler -- most of the performance improvements you're going to see will be due to improved coding of the rest of the system, particularly work on the threading libraries and decreasing the granularity of kernel locks. gcc-3.3.3 was imported for many reasons, but better code output was probably less important than the fact that it has far more support for the new tier-1 one architectures (AMD64, ultrasparc, etc.) which the old gcc-2.95 (as seen in 4.x) doesn't have. =20 > also, 5.3R's release date is "TBD 2004." Since you're running 5.0 already (which is an early, slow, buggy technology preview release that isn't supported any more) you clearly aren't betting your business on the stability of the OS you're running. Updating to 5.2.1 would be a good idea -- however, due to various system changes, that's not a simple as it might be: you should either read /usr/src/UPDATING carefully (once you've retreived the latest RELENG_5_2 sources) or just do a re-install from CD Rom. =20 > Lastly, does anybody have any personal experience with freebsd nfs > server and mac os x nfs client? more specifically, how to map uid > and gid? As far as I know it works well enough. See exports(5) for what support there is for mapping user identities under NFS. Generally NFS expects that your user credentials will be the same on the server as well as the client, and things will work a lot easier if you arrange things that way. To make domain specific addresses, use virtusertable. virtusertable support is already included in the stock freebsd.mc/freebsd.cf configuration, so all you need to do is populate the /etc/mail/virtusertable file, and run 'make' to generate the .db file. See /usr/share/sendmail/cf/README for details of what to put into virtusertable. Actually, you need Java 1.4 or above on 5.2.1 -- recent testing via the package building system on bento has turned up some errors when trying to use java 1.3.1 under 5.x, and they're going to move to 1.4.2 as the default JDK. Certainly the pre-compiled JDK 1.3.1 or JRE 1.3.1 packages from the FreeBSD Foundation won't work properly on 5.x. If you decide to go with Java 1.4.2 (on either 4.x or 5.x) be aware that you're going to have to jump through hoops in order to download the java sources and the FreeBSD patchsets (all in order to comply with the terms of the Sun Community Source License) and then you're going to have to compile the whole JDK yourself. Doing that via the ports is simple enough, but it takes a lot of time and system resources. Also you need to temporarily install one of the Linux JDK 1.4.x packages to bootstrap the compilation process. Since i use the deny stance, i needed to jump trough some hoops to get NFS working. I am currently just manually mapping the ports mountd is using. But it seems to work... for 99% I am able to do with the mounted nfs disk what i want, i can create new files( 'touch newfile' and vi 'newfile2' and i can write content in the file with vi) i can delete, read. But(...) when i use viM it will hangs it self. I can't manually kill it(exit-status doesn't matter, it won't die). And i don't get an error, so i have no clue what's wrong. My guess is that it is still busy, looped or something... So i removed(==recompiled kernel) ipfilter and vim worked fine on the nfs mount. Recompiled my kernel again with ipfilter and vim hang itself again. So it is vim+ipfilter I think it is still something with my configuration fo ipfilter, i have a basic rules set. I am still in the learning/finetuning phase, but i coulnd't find anything about this on google, onlamp, freebsddiary etc. Can anybody point me in the right direction? I edited freebsd.mc and added: INPUT_MAIL_FILTER(`clmilter',`S=local:/var/run/clamav/clmilter.sock, F=, T=S:4m;R:4m') i tried restarting sendmail process but it didn't take effect, so i need to make and make install in /etc/mail. i did that and nothing happen. I had exactly the same mainboard and it worked using 'device pcm' in my kernel. But my sound was terribly bad, kind of distorted. Try 'mixer pcm 75' and it should work somehow better. I actually bought a new one, becauce I had really big problems with this mainboard and I would definitley not recommend anybody to buy this one. If you are a ruby developer and want to keep ruby 1.6 as default, please add RUBY_DEFAULT_VER=3D1.6 to /etc/make.conf. Otherwise, please run the following series of commands to migrate to ruby 1.8: 1) Reinstall portupgrade manually (and as a result ruby 1.8 will be installed): pkg_delete portupgrade-\* (cd /usr/ports/sysutils/portupgrade; make install clean) 2) Reinstall everything that depends on ruby 1.6 to use ruby 1.8 instead: portupgrade -fr lang/ruby16 3) Reinstall ruby 1.8 (because the previous step kills symlinks): portupgrade -f lang/ruby18 4) Deinstall ruby 1.6 stuff (if you are paranoia): pkg_deinstall -ri lang/ruby16 5) If the above commands do now work somehow and portupgrade starts causing LoadError, please reinstall portupgrade manually again. Whenever you get confused, you can always deinstall portupgrade and all the ruby stuff (run "pkg_delete -r ruby-\*") and reinstall portupgrade as a last resort. ...and yes, it worked like a charm just now for me. Even BSD licenses are restrictive, and even inheriting a GPL license is OK to almost everyone, as long as the license doesn't require using the GPL on the parts of the derivative that they own, which the GPL doesn't require for some kinds of derivatives. > So I don't think my application is a derivative work of any of these. As you define "application" and "derivative", maybe, but consider this: First, it could be said that your application (the thing you are distributing and licensing) is much more than just the code that you own. You're distributing a "compilation" which is covered by copyright law (like any other derivative?); you own copyrights in the compilation and in parts and others own copyrights in other parts. Second, those who might sue you (or their lawyers) and courts might have different definitions of the words. Third, the license might cause problems for you even if your application is not a derivative. (The GPL says "the intent is to exercise the right to control the distribution of derivative or collective works based on the Program", possibly making a distinction between derivative and collective works, but covering both.) Fourth, copyright law uses the phrase "compilations and derivative works", seeming to imply that they are different, but treating them the same, in the most important ways. BTW, USC 17 has some definitions, but they leave much for lawyers to argue about. But it looks to me like all collective works are compilations and all compilations are derivative works. I'm sure some (especially those who've only read the GPL) would disagree. But that's just my understanding of things; you'll have to rely on the opinions of yourself and your lawyers. In the last months some clients have been asking us about offering them collocation, web hosting, mail and in general all the services they can have from an ISP BUT outside Mexico. Some of them really do not care about what part of the world will be as well as the server is outside the country and the response, service, uptime and additional tools the get are the best. On this most of the clients contract us for administering all the site so a web interface, control panel, will be the best option but with work fine also to install the OS and that then accessing the shell I can configure everything. The idea if possible us to offer them all the tools we can, shopping, database, php, webmail, etc, etc. We would manage everything so a Control Panel would be nice as I mentioned. I was wondering if you can comment about what will be the best step to follow. Our idea is to start promoting these services more and more. We would like to start with a beginner plan if possible to test the services and performance and to see what would be the best option to offer , that's why we are considering to choose 3-5 companies and have the same services configured for 2-3 months. That way we can check for sure the best option. Once we decided the best one we would move most of our services there since here (Mexico city) the bandwidth is becoming VERY expensive. Just to give you and idea we are paying 4,000 USD for a 2 MB for an E1 (a little different than the T1 in USA). We are looking if possible for a company that offer us collocation providing the equipment. We would like to have FreeBSD or Linux and for some configurations we have we would like to have MAC OS X Server 10.2.8 or greater and OS X 10.3. Our needs on bandwidth are about 300GB per month to start. The idea also is to start offering services to clients at lower prices than we offer now. I was checking some providers like Valueweb. Their plans look fine but since this is my first contact on collocation I wanted to ask first here to see what are your experiences. We know there are lot of people offering solutions at VERY cheap prices (I have found some for 9.99!) but we would like to have the correct services for the correct price. So we are not interested in "unreal" solutions. I'm asking for your advice if possible: a) Maybe this one sounds stupid. If you are a reseller also. What companies could you recommend me to look for services? b) If you are a company that offer this services DIRECTLY. What can you offer me?. What are your prices, conditions and plans for resellers? c) If would be better for me to contract a rack and put my servers there, already configured by us exactly for what we want to offer? If you offer reseller plans or offer the service, please let me know all the convenient information about your services. Specially we would like to have information on plans and prices, conditions (if any) ,obligations (if any), benefits and this one is very important, contracts. The contract part is very important because we need to give the samples/templates of the contracts to our lawyers because we can not sign anything without their permission (a very bad experience with a foreign company a couple of year ago made us be cautious in all our new negotiations). I was wondering if some of you are interested in having another reseller. If so please send me all the convenient information about your services like prices, conditions, obligations, contracts, etc. Those interested answer me OFFLINE please :jbiquez@icsmx.com Thanks in advance and please contact me offline. Now that I searched the lists and found out that you have to detect psm0 as (i didnt uncomment it out because I didnt have a ps/2 port) a device first, now i really got this bad gut feeling. Compiling a kernel is scary because the configuration is working and its hard going back to scratch! Is there a way i can detect my touchpad(or do i have to compile again)? btw im running FreeBSD 5.2-CURRENT on i386 hardware. Yours, Rommel __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! If you can find a mailbox format converter (I'm sure there are a few but I haven't checked), you could convert it to Maildir and easily script the operation as with a Maildir each message will be a separate file. The problem was already solved with formail & procmail. formail can process the mailbox --as you suggest-- and procmail calls spamassassin in its rules. The main issue here is simply that I don't _necessarily_ want to distribute source code to the application. (Of course, if the code remains largely PHP, I'll essentially be doing that anyway.) I don't want the decision to be pre-made just by interacting with other software. --=20 Paul. mailto:paulh@logicsquad.net --jRdC2OsRnuV8iIl8 Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFAeezn730Z/jysbzIRAj0zAKCCtfnZN1jNiW4KrTzyNIgRRUsuXQCdEmSD wqonxbRFi8nxf7s7WhdYZhQ= =yYxv -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --jRdC2OsRnuV8iIl8-- From owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Apr 11 18:16:52 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2072716A4CE for ; Sun, 11 Apr 2004 18:16:52 -0700 (PDT) Received: from hotmail.com (law10-f40.law10.hotmail.com [64.4.15.40]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E834443D58 for ; Sun, 11 Apr 2004 18:16:51 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from carrn166@hotmail.com) Received: from mail pickup service by hotmail.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC; Sun, 11 Apr 2004 18:16:51 -0700 Received: from 172.149.2.252 by lw10fd.law10.hotmail.msn.com with HTTP; Mon, 12 Apr 2004 01:16:51 GMT X-Originating-IP: [172.149.2.252] X-Originating-Email: [carrn166@hotmail.com] X-Sender: carrn166@hotmail.com From: "Aaron Carranza" To: freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.org Date: Mon, 12 Apr 2004 01:16:51 +0000 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1; format=flowed Message-ID: X-OriginalArrivalTime: 12 Apr 2004 01:16:51.0798 (UTC) FILETIME=[D5ED0760:01C4202B] Subject: please help X-BeenThere: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: User questions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 12 Apr 2004 01:16:52 -0000 I know that you guys have more important things to do, but i have no one to ask about freebsd because i know no one who use it. how do i do the updates for the OS on freebsd to meke sure my computer will be running healthy? _________________________________________________________________ MSN Amor: busca tu ½ naranja http://latino.msn.com/autos/ From owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Apr 11 18:42:53 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 84DF716A4CE for ; Sun, 11 Apr 2004 18:42:53 -0700 (PDT) Received: from filter.mimos.my (filter.mimos.my [192.228.137.70]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2BAA243D5C for ; Sun, 11 Apr 2004 18:42:52 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from suhaimi@niser.org.my) Received: from ew.mimos.my (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by filter.mimos.my (8.11.6/8.11.6) with ESMTP id i3C1goF02227; Mon, 12 Apr 2004 09:42:50 +0800 Received: from niser.org.my (niser192.nat.mimos.my [10.1.6.192]) by ew.mimos.my (8.12.9p2/8.12.9) with ESMTP id i3C1gn92089796; Mon, 12 Apr 2004 09:42:49 +0800 (MYT) (envelope-from suhaimi@niser.org.my) Message-ID: <4079F413.8020304@niser.org.my> Date: Mon, 12 Apr 2004 09:42:43 +0800 From: Suhaimi Jamalludin Organization: NISER User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.6b) Gecko/20031208 X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Aaron Carranza References: In-Reply-To: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new cc: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Subject: Re: please help X-BeenThere: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: User questions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 12 Apr 2004 01:42:53 -0000 Hi Aaron Carranza, First of all...what is your current FreeBSD version? I found out after about the critical error and all the posts about freebsd not working on a2 thinkpads. If i hit f1 or f12 it gives me the loading screen and nothing happens and boot diskettes i put in my floppy drive dont load prolly cause the os wont boot. How can i get rid of freebsd if the os wont boot and the screen doesnt get past the big ibm with the f1 and f12 at the bottom.Ive already tried putting in the cd for the fix cd-cvs and boot loader downloads you have on the site they didnt get recognized or prolly couldnt run cause the machine wouldnt boot. Im stumped on this one and havent gotten much help from forums so figured id directly email u. Id appreciate(and desperately need) your help. _________________________________________________________________ Persistent heartburn?
