He's installed inn from the ports collection, but can't seem to keep the machine running for more than a few hours at a time. He's tried several combinations of SCSI cards/cables, but it hasn't made any difference so far. The most recent crash did terrible things to one of the file systems; fsck reports files with billions of blocks, unknown file types, and more.
