Look, it's *obvious* that the Linux box ran with a single CPU only.
I have a hard time attributing your behavior to stupidity rather than
malice.

Compiling bash with "make -j2" vs. "make" on a dual PPro under Linux
2.0.35 cuts the real time almost in half.
