Well, in the first case, the offending drive was a Seagate; the Quantum was
working fine. In both cases, it seems, there are parts of the drives that
are failing -- if it were the UDMA causing it, you'd know because *all*
writes would be held up. Also, this old 270MB Quantum doesn't even have
support for multiword 2 DMA (we don't support multiword 1 or any of the
single-word modes).
