It turned out that the magic incantation was to use the BIOS setup to say that I didn't have a Plug'n'Pray OS. The BIOS then fiddled with the card, displayed the devices (WSS/SB & MPU) which the kernel then picked up when it rebooted. Now I'll look at why the DSP_SETFRAGMENT call doesnt do nice things with queue length (makes playing doom rather funny with delayed sounds) and after that I'll look at the {get,set}trigger issues and the dreaded mmap ioctl perversion.
