Alternately, set the permissions on /var/mail to 1777 (drwxrwxrwt), the
same as /tmp, which is the recommended solution. Be sure to stick
/var/mail on its own partition, though, so you can apply user quotas to
it (which you should do whether you're running pine or not, in a
multiuser system).
