It's possible, but you have to test thoroughly.
I run a complete 2.2.6 system (a few patches to the rc-scripts 
and a few binaries from 4.x) jailed on a 4.9 server. On a 5.2.1
server I run a jailed 3.2 as well as a jailed ca. 4.6.
