 You can install DES on your FreeBSD system and not have to do
the conversion...

 The password files are different; but you should be able to simply
grab the encrypted password entries from SCO and place them in
a FreeBSD password file & have everything work.   I share password
entries in this fashion between HP/UX 9.05, AIX 3.2.5, SunOS 4.1
and Solaris 2 without any problems...
