At this point the system locks up solidly, responding only the the reset button and the power switch. Other non-FreeBSD OSs tried installed without problems (Windows 2000 and XP, Mandrake 9.1 and 10, NetBSD 1.6.2) so I don't believe it's a hardware issue. With or without ACPI, standard or safe-mode - the result is the same. However, FreeBSD itself runs - having installed a working 5.2-CURRENT disk in the system it boots and runs just fine.
