Subject: Naming ethernet NICs

In Linux, my two NICs were referred to (always) as eth0 and eth1. In FreeBSD,
they're called rl0 and xl0. These names seem to relate to the driver (i.e.,
rl0 is a Realtek 1839).

Is this actually the case or am I misunderstanding something? Are there
occasions when you'd refer to them in a more abstract way -- e.g., eth0/1?

Thanks.

M.
