What kind of soundcard do you have actually?  I have a genuine SB16,
and I
use Luigi Rizzo's pcm driver.  It works great.  dmesg:

pcm1 (SB16pnp <Vibra16X> sn 0xffffffff) at 0x220-0x22f irq 5 drq 1 flags
0x13 on isa

kernel config:

controller      pnp0
device          pcm0 at isa ? port? tty irq 5 drq 1

If you have an ESS emulating a SB, I haven't tried this.  I have a laptop
with the ESS688 soundcard, and I use OSS to drive it.
