FWIW, with both

controller ncr0
controller sym0

in the kernel config, the machine boots successfully, attaching:

sym0: <875> rev 0x26 int a irq 11 on pci0.13.0
sym0: No NVRAM, ID 7, Fast-20, SE, parity checking

Waiting 10 seconds for SCSI devices to settle
changing root device to da0s1a
da0 at sym0 bus 0 target 0 lun 0
da0: <SEAGATE ST34520W 1487> Fixed Direct Access SCSI-2 device
da0: 40.000MB/s transfers (20.000MHz, offset 15, 16bit), Tagged Queueing
Enabled
da0: 4340MB (8888924 512 byte sectors: 255H 63S/T 553C)
