Ross, I would argue that this is an OS problem. <HERESY> DOS, Win 3.1 and FreeBSD have problems here. Win95 is smart enough to deal with this gracefully under most circumstances. FreeBSD cannot give a nice report of resources already consumed. It's hard to tell if it even knows. FreeBSD sometimes seems to mis-assign resources already in use. Win95 will report exactly what resources are in use, and is smart enough to disable devices which have conflicting resource requirements, unless it is OK. Dos and Win 3.1 seem more like FreeBSD in this regard. </HERESY> Furthermore, PC hardware has brought us the cheap boxes which allow us to run FreeBSD; and given us the flexibility to use all sorts of nifty devices, or the option of buying commodity hardware for next to nothing. I for one am very thankful to Intel, <MORE HERESY> MS </MORE HERESY>, and others I don't know for engineering all this stuff to work. Anyways, that's the way I see it.
