I recommend that you install teTeX - it's in the ports collection
(/usr/ports/print/teTeX if you installed the ports in the default place).
It contains TeX, LaTeX, and a lot of packages (foiltex, amstex etc).  It
also contains all of the dvi utilities that I know of.
