this has been changed because of an upgrade of nvi...  the split feature
it replaced with making the command be the upcase of the command you want
to split off...

i.e. if you want to edit another file in a new window... do:
:E some.new.file

check out /usr/share/doc/usd/13.viref/paper.ascii.gz for more info...
