Just 'au' will start the server,

auinfo -audio tcp/localhost:8000

will check if it's running, then you should be able to run any of the
programs mentioned on the nas manpage in a similar way.

AFAIK, apps can't use NAS unless they have support compiled in - see
the library.ps file in the source for details on how to do this.
