I'm not really up to something like that unless there is strong support for that... but I had something else to do today, so to avoid doing that I got to play around a bit with Y! Search :-). This is just a proof-of-concept, which certainly needs to be tweaked more etc, but it seems to work: http://people.freebsd.org/~simon/search/ I know more elaborate solutions has been suggeted, but the advantage of this setup is that it's rather simple to do. Is this the way to go? Note: I have to read over the terms a few more times to be sure you are allowed to embed the search box like that into the site, but I think it's OK from how I read it. -- Simon L. Neither links or elinks will help for the multibyte environments of Chinese, Japanese, Korean and the likes. They simply do not understand encodings such as EucJP, SJIS, GB18030, GB2312, EucKR, or UTF-8. Using www/w3m-m17n I can at least view Japanese pages. Using a 'w3m -dump http://website > dump.txt' of a EucJP encoded page the resulting file is an UTF-8 encoded plain text file. The same also works for (X-)SJIS (Japanese), GB2312 (Chinese/PRC), EucKR (Korean), UTF-8, TIS-620 (Thai), Big5 (Taiwanese), VISCII (Vietnamese), and KOI8-U (Russian). I tried some ISO-8859 dumps as well (8859-6 for example as well as -7) and it all works fine. So my suggestion is to change HTML2TXT to use w3m from w3m-m17n. -- Jeroen Ruigrok van der Werven / asmodai イェルーン ラウフロック ヴァン デル ウェルヴェン http://www.in-nomine.org/ | http://www.rangaku.org/ Reality is an illusion, grimmer. These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. r - repocopy The resolution of the problem report is dependent on a repocopy operation within the CVS repository which is awaiting completion. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. I think a section about that would be greatly welcomed in real life examples and information. Do you have a link so that we can review the article you wrote so that we might use that asa a base to start this? You do not have to be a committer to contribute though! Since we are a very open community we can do all the committer stuff for you so that you can focus on the content itself which makes something like this a joint effort in the user communities. And if you contribute a lot; and "annoy" the committers; showing that you have gained the knowledge and information needed to be a part of the team, you will eventually get "punished" by getting a commit bit and initially a mentor assigned. Thanks for the interest in helping out, we are waiting for more details to start working on this. + Ray Lai: on OpenCVS + + OpenBSD 4.1 Release Song - Puffy Baba and the 40 Vendors + + As developers of a free operating system, one of + our prime responsibilities is device support. No + matter how nice an operating system is, it remains + useless and unusable without solid support for a + wide percentage of the hardware that is available + on the market. It is therefore rather unsurprising + that more than half of our efforts focus on various + aspects relating to device support. +

+

+ Most parts of the operating system (from low kernel, + through to libraries, all the way up to X, and then + even to applications) use fairly obvious interface + layers, where the "communication protocols" or + "argument passing" mechanisms (ie. APIs) can be + understood by any developer who takes the time to + read the free code. Device drivers pose an additional + and significant challenge though: because many + vendors refuse to document the exact behavior of + their devices. The devices are black boxes. And + often they are surprisingly weird, or even buggy. +

+

+ When vendor documentation does not exist, the + development process can become extremely hairy. + Groups of developers have found themselves focused + for months at a time, figuring out the most simple + steps, simply because the hardware is a complete + mystery. Access to documentation can ease these + difficulties rapidly. However, getting access to + the chip documentation from vendors is ... almost + always a negotiation. If we had open access to + documentation, anyone would be able to see how + simple all these devices actually are, and device + driver development would flourish (and not just in + OpenBSD, either). +

+

+ When we proceed into negotiations with vendors, + asking for documentation, our position is often + weak. One would assume that the modern market is + fair, and that selling chips would be the primary + focus of these vendors. But unfortunately a number + of behemoth software vendors have spent the last + 10 or 20 years building political + hurdles against the smaller players. +

+

+ A particularly nasty player in this regard has been + the Linux vendors and some Linux developers, who + have played along with an American corporate model + of requiring NDAs for chip documentation. This has + effectively put Linux into the club with Microsoft, + but has left all the other operating system communities + -- and their developers -- with much less available + clout for requesting documentation. In a more fair + world, the Linux vendors would work with us, and + the device driver support in all free operating + systems would be fantastic by now. +

+

+ We only ask that users + help us in changing the political landscape. +

Welcome back :-) I don't have something in committable form, but the general idea is to take Edwin's Perl script, which reads `multimedia.xml' and writes HTML pages, and convert the Perl code to an XSLT stylesheet which can generate similar HTML output. - Giorgos From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Wed May 16 18:50:04 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3C62A16A401 for ; Wed, 16 May 2007 18:50:04 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [69.147.83.40]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1D7CC13C4DB for ; Wed, 16 May 2007 18:50:04 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id l4GIo39a019111 for ; Wed, 16 May 2007 18:50:03 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id l4GIo3wU019110; Wed, 16 May 2007 18:50:03 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Wed, 16 May 2007 18:50:03 GMT Resent-Message-Id: <200705161850.l4GIo3wU019110@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, Rajkumar S Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9342116A40A for ; Wed, 16 May 2007 18:46:48 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (www.freebsd.org [69.147.83.33]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6CFCE13C4B7 for ; Wed, 16 May 2007 18:46:48 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by www.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id l4GIkm3d022578 for ; Wed, 16 May 2007 18:46:48 GMT (envelope-from nobody@www.freebsd.org) Received: (from nobody@localhost) by www.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1/Submit) id l4GIfkk1021973; Wed, 16 May 2007 18:41:46 GMT (envelope-from nobody) Message-Id: <200705161841.l4GIfkk1021973@www.freebsd.org> Date: Wed, 16 May 2007 18:41:46 GMT From: Rajkumar S To: freebsd-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org X-Send-Pr-Version: www-3.0 Cc: Subject: docs/112720: pfctl: man page does not document probability X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 16 May 2007 18:50:04 -0000 >Number: 112720 >Category: docs >Synopsis: pfctl: man page does not document probability >Confidential: no >Severity: non-critical >Priority: low >Responsible: freebsd-doc >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: doc-bug >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Wed May 16 18:50:03 GMT 2007 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: Rajkumar S >Release: FreeBSD 6.2-RELEASE-p3 >Organization: Linuxense >Environment: FreeBSD beastie.linuxense.com 6.2-RELEASE-p3 FreeBSD 6.2-RELEASE-p3 #0: Sat Apr 21 13:50:18 IST 2007 root@beastie.linuxense.com:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC i386 >Description: pfctl can load a rule like pass in proto icmp probability 20% but this is not documented in pfctl manpage. >How-To-Repeat: man pfctl >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Wed May 16 19:20:10 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B86FC16A400 for ; Wed, 16 May 2007 19:20:10 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [69.147.83.40]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A95B613C45D for ; Wed, 16 May 2007 19:20:10 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id l4GJKAvx022044 for ; Wed, 16 May 2007 19:20:10 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id l4GJKAap022043; Wed, 16 May 2007 19:20:10 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Wed, 16 May 2007 19:20:10 GMT Message-Id: <200705161920.l4GJKAap022043@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org From: Remko Lodder Cc: Subject: Re: docs/112720: pfctl: man page does not document probability X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Remko Lodder List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 16 May 2007 19:20:10 -0000 The following reply was made to PR docs/112720; it has been noted by GNATS. Also, both manual pages exist. Perhaps a Xref to snd_hda(4) from snd_ich(4) is needed due to the fact the chipset is typically known as ICH and people will use that as their first vector of approach. Nonetheless, it still means that on STABLE the NOTES and snd_ich(4) documentation needs changes to reflect STABLE does NOT support HDA yet. -- Jeroen Ruigrok van der Werven / asmodai イェルーン ラウフロック ヴァン デル ウェルヴェン http://www.in-nomine.org/ | http://www.rangaku.org/ Alas! Bjorn is a single point of failure for this list, and he's the only one who can maintain it. Consensus appears to be that it's a useful resource that deserves keeping. Any opinions on bringing this into the doc/ tree? I think having it as an article would be useful. Multiple people could maintain it that way. I'm in the final landing stages of "Absolute FreeBSD," so I could do the conversion in a couple of months (six weeks to finish the book, two weeks to stare blankly at the wall).
