Sorry, you have heard wrong.  It's 2.2 that has the much better ATAPI
driver.

You can however download just the installation floppy, and see whether
it's willing to work with your drive.  (You have to explicitly hit the
button before it will destroy anything, so don't worry.)  Simply boot
it, then Alt-F2, and look whether sysinstall announces that it's found
a device of type CD-ROM.
