 Thanks for your suggestion.
 
 I stripped down the kernel to just ata0, fdc0, atkbd0, psm0, sc0, pcic0
 and npx0. I do this by running 'boot -c -v'. This gives lots of debug
 output, When the installations process stops while probing devices, I can
 still use Alt-F2 to see debug. The attached image shows where it stops.
 
 Removing devices does not help.
