Perhaps some people think that having this sort of line in the output of who utility as being useful: andrew :0 Nov 12 20:15 I don't, because it confuses other utilties like wall: wall: /dev/:0: No such file or directory ...and both sessreg and the +ut option for *term work just great (if you want them). I used this tutorial: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/developers-handbook/kernel= debug-gdb.html I noticed that there were a few references to drm_vm.c. So, I commented out the line: # Load dri in the modules section. Then I typed startx, and it worked! Well, I just started Gnome and it seems to be acting differently. But, I'm not sure if this is related. It's funny because dri was already commented out as an option in the device section. Maybe someone else could shed some light on why this happened. But, I suspect it has something to do with the (lack of) drivers for the now defunct 3dfx voodoo card. I can't seem to reproduce it. Is your pkgdb in good > shape - does running 'pkgdb -F' complain about duplicate origins? The following may help reproduce it. Below is the state of my pkgdb at the time of my troubles. Take a system with a good install of xorg and xterm. Then 'pkg_delete -f' xorg-clients and xterm. Then try to 'portupgrade -NO' them back in. I don't know for sure if that will reproduce the problem or not, but its a close approximation of where I was when I was having troubles. More pointedly, what is up with this message: ===> xorg-clients-6.8.2_1 depends on package: xterm>0 - not found Is there really a package named "xterm>0" ? Sure. It's xterm that has version bigger than 0 - so any xterm would do. It's not quite yet documented feature that got added in June (there's entry about it in CHANGES file - 20050609). It seemed perfect for this occasion, because depending on xterm or xterm-static executable was not desired. I wouldn't want to trouble you more but it would be interesting > to know the contents of /var/db/pkg at that time. I would surmise the conflict is because numerous other packages depend upon xorg-clients. So even though the package is temporarily missing, there are entries to it in the pkgdb dependency tree. Sorry, I don't have a snapshot of the /var/db/pkg/ directory at the time. However, the pkgdb -F output may show you what I mean about the dependencies. I don't mean to draw this out, I simply wanted to inquire about the Makefile syntax, and the fact that -- perhaps coincidentally -- editing out the ">0" and then doing a "make install" in xorg-clients made all my problems go away. There is also the untested theory that only portupgrade had a problem -- all my "conflict" messages come from portupgrade. Toward the end of my episode, since portupgrade had already build xorg-clients, but failed to install it, I went into /usr/ports/x11/xorg-clients, edited out the ">0" and was able to do a successful "make install" that installed xorg-clients and xterm. I thought the Makefile edit was what did the trick for me. Perhaps it was doing the manual "make install" that worked, and would have worked even with the stock makefile. Who knows. If the patch has no value, so be it. I just wanted to share what I had found that worked for me, again, perhaps just by coincidence. It works if you have installed xterm that installs xterm executable. It wouldn't work for previous versions of xterm which installed xterm-static binary. So your patch might still help someone that already has xterm-206_1 installed and bumps into similar problem. It just can't go into ports cvs - the upgrade described in UPDATING would fail with this dependency. Thanks for the help. Given Andy's mail, I do wonder if "make install" as opposed to portupgrade would work without making change to Makefile though. There are no debugging symbols in default install of XFree86-clients (where mkfontdir comes from). To get them you need to add '-g' to CFLAGS and add a line to scripts/configure of x11/XFree86-4-clients port: echo "#define StripInstalledPrograms NO" >> $LOCALDEF (below the line echo "#define UseInstalledLibraries YES" >> $LOCALDEF for example). Then recompile this port and when you get to gdb, obtain a backtrace with 'bt'. Is the hardware in good shape (see http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/faq/troubleshoot.html#SIGNAL11)? This seems to be the case with all OpenGL games / apps. glxgears with its default settings (that is, I just typed 'glxgears' with no options) renders about 7200 FPS on average. I know I shouldn't expect things to run perfectly, especially since most of these games are Linux binaries, but still, most people I've asked tell me it should be able to run faster, and in some cases even outperform Windows. Yet I can't figure out what is making these games run so slow for me. I'm posting this here hoping someone can assist me, maybe there's some magical tweak I can try or something I misconfigured. Or perhaps it is simply not possible, but that would at least give me closure ;) I have the following hardware: Mobo: ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe (BIOS 1015) CPU: AMD Athlon64 3500+ Memory: 2x512 PC3200 DDR RAM, running at 400MHz in Dual Channel Video: Geforce 6800GT PCI-Express (non-SLI, just one) Sound: SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS I run 6.0-RELEASE with the following versions of related ports (all up-to-date as I type this): dri-6.2.1,2 gnome2-2.12.1 linux-XFree86-libs-4.3.99.902_4 linux-doom3-demo-1.1.1286 linux-quake3-demo-1.11.6_4 linux-quake4-1.0.5,1 linux-sdl-1.2.5_2 linux_base-8-8.0_9 linux_dri-4.4.0 nvidia-driver-1.0.7676_1 nvidia-settings-1.0_6 quake2lnx-0.16.2_1 svgalib-1.4.3_5 xorg-6.8.2 I have logs of Doom 3 / Quake 4 / Xorg startup, installed ports, my xorg.conf, an error I get when launching Doom3/Quake (ttyv0.txt), and my kernel config (MYKERNEL) attached. As far as I can tell I have installed everything according to the handbook chapter on X and read the README for the nvidia FreeBSD driver (although I skipped most steps relating to AGP since I have a PCI Express card). PS: I have the logs/configs mirrored at http://nieser.net/files/xorg/1/ incase they are stripped off by the maillinglist. PS2: My xorg.conf contains two lines RenderAccel / AllowGLXWithComposite which I believe are experimental, but I had the same issues before I added these. Well here's an interesting twist; when I log into X/Gnome as root, the games run a heck of a lot smoother (note that su/sudo doesn't have the same effect, I really have to login as root). Quake 4 went from 10-20 fps in the first level to 40-50 fps on average. I'm guesssing however that playing games as root (online games, that is) might not be a good idea. Now I just need to figure out what exactly makes games run slower for non-root users.
