I forgot to mention - the device does NOT get reset during
the boot (no tape positioning takes place). 
'camcontrol reset 0:6:0' results in:
camcontrol:  CAMIOCOMMAND ioctl failed: Invalid argument

The messages I used to get at open/close time under CAM were
related to the inability of the drive to support 
locking/unlocking of the tape cartridge in the drive.
