Sigh. Some days my brain actually works...honest!

It is clearly acpi that is crashing my system. I just realized that
GENERIC contains only a kernel and no modules including acpi.ko, so
that GENERIC never TRYS to use ACPI. It's not an compiler issue.

Guess I'll try using apm until such time as I can cvsup and grab a
copy of the latest ACPI code.
